BASIC FUNCTION:

This position is responsible for conducting research under the umbrella of the Luce-funded EnviroLab Asia Postdoctoral researcher with Profs Branwen Williams and Katie Purvis-Roberts.  The research goals are to explore air pollution associated with rural agriculture.  

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Reporting to Profs Branwen Williams and Katie Purvis-Roberts, the postdoc research will work collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:

1. Develop and interpret dataset of air pollution in South Korea (40%)

2. Oversee instrumental analyses at the Claremont Colleges (15%)

3. Co-write manuscripts for publication (10%)

4. Train and mentor undergraduate researchers on their own research projects (15%)

5. Teach one combined lecture and lab course (= two course credits) a year with close mentoring from Claremont faculty (20%)

The exact percent of time on the above duties will vary depending on progression of the research aims and are subject to change as the project continues; time allocation estimates are included in parentheses.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

EDUCATION: 

PhD in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Geology, Biology, or related field.

EXPERIENCE: 

A minimum of two years of experience in the atmospheric sciences with a focus in any of the following categories: air quality, particulate matter, gas-phase pollution, agricultural pollution, or related field.  Applicants who express a strong interest or demonstrated experience in South Korea are of particular interest.

LICENSES: 

A valid driver’s license or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events is required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:  Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.

Demonstrate effective, accurate and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, and leadership skills to supervise, facilitate, motivate and inspire a diverse group of undergraduate students (student volunteers and/or student employees).

Operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Adobe Photoshop and/or Illustrator, and statistical/modeling software (such as R or Matlab).

Operate laboratory equipment necessary for analysis for research samples (potentially Ion Chromatography, Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy, Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry, and/or others).

Handle all activities with patience, discretion, good judgment, courtesy, tact, and strong self-motivation while working independently on personal duties/goals and also with individuals (particularly undergraduates) from a wide variety of backgrounds and skill levels to accomplish designated goals in a timely manner.

Use exceptional organizational and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and a keen attention to detail.

OTHER:

REQUIRED HOURS: 

The regular hours for this full time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening work hours may be required periodically for certain routine duties to accomplish research goals in a timely manner, as determined by the PI. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division. This is a 24-month position with the need to start by August 1st, 2019.
