Position DescriptionThis primary purpose of this position is to serve as a professional-level Human Resources (HR) Consultant within the UNC-CH School of Medicine under the general direction of the Associate Director for SOM HR. In this capacity, the position is responsible for providing consultation and guidance to SOM Vice Deans, Executive Associate Deans, Assistant Deans, Department Chairs, Center Directors, Senior Administrators, Supervisors, and Departmental Staff. Consultative services include classification/compensation and recruitment/staffing of SHRA positions, compensation philosophy, salary administration, reduction-in-force actions, and related HR policies. This includes significant decision-making authority in the approval of decentralized classification/compensation and recruitment/staffing actions. The application and interpretation of State and University HR policies, while providing consultation on related issues and concerns, is necessary in helping to carry out both school-level and campus-wide HR strategies and plans. Knowledge of related HR policies and procedures is necessary for efficient and effective decision-making.
Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsBachelor’s degree and two years of progressively responsible professional human resources management experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and AbilitiesDemonstrated knowledge of human resources policies, procedures, and best practices. Demonstrated ability to interpret a variety of interrelated classification, compensation, recruitment, and performance management policies, procedures, and programs for SOM clients. High level of communication skills (both written and verbal), customer service and consultation ability. Ability to work with all levels of SOM leadership, faculty, and staff. This is a “Position of Trust”.
Preferred QualificationsExperience with and knowledge of UNC-CH HR policies and procedures. Experience with PeopleSoft HCM software. PHR, SHRM, or other HR certification preferred.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers. Carolina Computing Initiative: Beginning with the freshman class of 2000, undergraduates must purchase laptop computers. The University has arranged for IBM to offer computers at excellent prices.
