Department Description

The School of Medicine is the largest academic unit at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with over 9500 employees. The School’s Human Resources Office is a “decentralized” office providing services covering classification, compensation, recruitment, employee relations, EHRA Faculty and Non-Faculty issues and topics, immigration and credentialing services and other personnel related functions. The School’s mission spans the full scope of education, research, clinical care and service activities, comprising more than 40% of UNC-CH operating expenditures and more than 50% of sponsored program awards and indirect cost funds earned at UNC-CH.

Position Description

More than 375 people within over 50 departments/centers in the School of Medicine are international scholars/employees. Successful recruitment and hiring of these candidates necessitates that the School of Medicine have strong expertise regarding federal and university policies and processes on the employing of foreign nationals and processing of immigration paperwork. This position is one of four positions within the School of Medicine HR Office responsible for processing immigration paperwork for all international scholars within the School of Medicine. The Immigration/Credentialing Specialist is responsible for the timely submission and tracking of documents, working in conjunction with the university’s International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). This position will serve as a School of Medicine liaison with ISSS, fielding any questions and concerns from School of Medicine managers regarding the application process. The person in this position must understand and interpret federal and university policies and procedures for H1B, EB2, EB1, J1, O1 and TN applications. The Immigration/Credentialing Specialist will counsel faculty and School of Medicine leadership on the process, timeframe, and requirements for each type of immigration status. This position will also serve as one of the Credentialing Specialists for the Clinical departments in the SOM. The person in this position will be responsible for completion of the application process for both establishing and renewing clinical privileges for SOM clinical faculty and will work closely with faculty and Department Chairs. This position will report to the Associate Director of the School of Medicine HR Office.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

    Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers.
