DESCRIPTION

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:The Student Retention and Success Departments within Student Affairs play a leadership role in creating and providing programs and services that foster student success and persistence and programs that develop personal, academic, and professional skills and relationships needed for a successful transition into diverse and global communities.

This includes promotion and expansion of existing Student Affairs retention initiatives and the transformation of existing departments and programs under the oversight of the Assistant Vice Chancellor (AVC) into a cohesive, trans-disciplinary source of services to support student success and retention in response to the Chancellor's strategic plan to improve retention and graduation rates. Student Retention and Success includes the departments of Global Education, Academic Enrichment Programs (AEP), Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services (OASIS), Student Veterans Resource Center, Chancellor's Associate Scholars Program (CASP), Undocumented Student Support Services, Student Success Programs, Student Retention and Success Business Office, and the administration/AVCs office.

POSITION OVERVIEW:If you’re a high-energy, student-centered, equity-minded, adaptable and highly organized student affairs professional looking to have an impact on the retention and success of hundreds of students, we’d love to have you join our team. Initiated in Fall 2016, the Student Success Coaching program operates out of a strengths-based framework to provide holistic support for a cohort of students who are the first in their families to attend college. The Student Success Coaching Program is a recognized promising practice which employs evidence and theory-based best practices to catapult students to succeed. We need intentional, caring, innovative and passionate professionals to help students achieve their personal, professional and academic goals.

With direction from the Program Director, the Student Success Coach Senior is a member of the SSP leadership team, assisting the Director with strategic vision and execution to ensure first-generation student success. In this role, the Student Success Coach Senior serves as a liaison for campus partners including undergraduate colleges, campus community centers, resource centers, academic support units, and more while leading and guiding the work of professional coaches and supervising peer coaches. The Student Success Coach Senior uses proactive and appreciative transformative coaching approaches to provide personalized yet scalable support to help students succeed at UC San Diego. Additionally, acts in the absence of the Director.

The Student Success Coach Senior will work individually with a designated cohort of incoming and continuing students to facilitate student success, retention, and campus integration through targeted outreach, coaching, mentoring, and monitoring of study management plans while connecting students to high impact practices that exist across the campus. The Student Success Coach Senior will provide scholastic direction in individual and group formats and directs students to campus and community resources that will assist students in maintaining or enhancing academic success.

The Student Success Coach Senior assists the Director with assessment and evaluation activities ensuring adherence to the UC San Diego strategic plan, Student Affairs learning domains, and SRS goals and metrics. In this effort, the incumbent supports the development of strategic partnerships, connecting the Student Success Coaching program with high priority student success initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to motivate, lead, and guide a team of professionals and para-professionals. Experience supervising and/or providing work direction in a complex matrix organization.

  • Bachelor’s degree with major emphasis in a related field and two years of related experience in a college-level student support services, preferably in a learning skills service, an educational opportunity program, or a success coaching program or an equivalent combination of education and experience; knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. A Master's degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

  • Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement. Proven skill using in the development, implementation and evaluation of educational, cultural, and social programs in a higher education environment that reflect the needs of an underrepresented, multicultural and other non-traditional college students.

  • Demonstrated presentation skills and experience conducting courses, workshops and seminars to various audiences. Knowledge of outreach strategies, and program evaluation techniques.

  • Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, physically challenged, and under prepared students in higher education.

  • Knowledge of theories and principles of higher education and student development, with ability to interpret and implement policies and procedures. Skilled in student development, counseling, and leadership theories; verified ability to develop positive mentoring/coaching relationships with a diverse student population.

  • Knowledge and experience in analyzing problems and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs. Solid assessment skills for identifying areas for improvement and developing innovative solutions. Ability to recognize problems, conflicts or impact to others, research options, present alternatives, implement solutions and follow through to ensure goals are met.

  • Familiarity with research methodologies and research designs. Demonstrated ability to work compile and analyze data and prepare summary and or statistical reports and instructional materials with attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality, with ability to maintain a calm and professional demeanor while interacting with a variety of individuals and groups at all levels of the university community from diverse socio-economic to cultural/ethnic backgrounds.

  • Strong organizational skills with ability to set priorities, multi-task and meet deadlines and goals. Aptitude to work independently, with minimal direction, in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions and changing priorities.

  • Knowledge of academic learning and study strategies.

  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and develop programmatic activities from general guidelines. Demonstrated ability to independently establish objectives, set priorities, plan, direct, meet deadlines, and evaluate all aspects of event production---all within a paradigm that addresses the unique needs of our student population.

  • Proven experience writing quality, compelling, and accurate content to help generate visibility for brand, reputation, initiatives and events including demonstrated experience writing for social media and email marketing.
