Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner - Senior Instructor

TheDepartment of Family Medicine provides primary health care, educates medical,advanced practice nurse and psychology students and graduates, conductsresearch and engages with communities. This position is is primarily clinical,providing medication and psychotherapeutic management of patients with behavioral,emotional and mental disorders at the Johnson Depression Center and inintegrated care settings around Colorado and the Western United States. It mayhowever, allow the applicant opportunities for advancement and engagement inhigh-level academic medicine at one of the premier academic medical centers.

Position Duties

   

Clinical Care

  • Provide patient care using evidence-basedpharmacology and psychotherapy to assess, diagnose and treat behavioral, mentalor emotional conditions.
  • Design, implement and evaluate healthpromotion/disease prevention interventions.
  • Prescribe and provide on-going management ofpsychiatric medication as appropriate.
  • Facilitate patient teaching to supportself-management skills and to maximize patient recovery.
  • Communicate and collaborate with familyand/or professionals to maintain and maximize quality of care for patients.
  • Facilitate referrals to a higher level of care asneeded depending on the clinical needs of the patient. .
  • Provide team-based care with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Work in integrated care settings such as FamilyMedicine Clinics and/or Infectious Disease/HIV Clinic to provide integratedmental health services.

Teaching andSupervision

  • Supervise psychiatric and behavioral health trainees(graduate students in nursing, medicine or psychology).
  • Engage in opportunities for lectureship on campusincluding within the School of Nursing, the School of Medicine and within theAdvanced Practice Provider (APP) community.
  • Support community partnerships by providingeducational talks and training sessions.

Administrative

  • Maintains eligibility for School of Medicine Faculty.
  • ­Keeps apprised of the latest developments in the field,both academically and through applied skill.
  • Participate in quality improvement and practicetransformation initiatives, workflow modification, and the identification anddeployment of new efficiencies.
  • May participate in clinical research projects (but notrequired to be a clinician-researcher unless pursuing traditional promotionpath).
  • Attends and presents at conferences, meetings andtrainings in order to maintain certification and enhance professional skills;participates in faculty development activities.
  • Accepts other responsibilities specifically assigned bythe Executive Director and/or Medical Director.

QualificationsMinimumQualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Psychiatric Nursing from an accreditedand approved program.
  • Current ANCC credentialing in Psychiatric-Mental Health NPor Psychiatric-Mental Health CNS
  • Ability to obtain and maintain:
    • A current, active, and unrestricted licensure as Colorado NP orCNS with prescriptive authority.
    • Prescriptive authority from the Colorado State Board of Nursing.Consideration will be given to candidates who have completed all requirementsfor this authority except for supervisory hours.
  • Medical Staff Privileges within UCH
  • 2+ years’ experience in behavioral medicine.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Clinical expertise in conducting brief and targetedassessments to provide medication management, psychotherapy interventions,health and behavior change, substance use treatment, and triage for appropriatelevel of care.
  • Understanding of and ability to apply ethicalprinciples, including confidentiality and the maintenance of patient autonomyto all care provided.
  • Demonstrated skill in supervision of clinical staff andtrainees.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High degree of professionalism, and ability to establishand maintain effective working relationships with Department of Family Medicineand clinic faculty and staff.
  • Ability to work effectively on multiple tasks andin providing care to multiple services lines all the while, maintaining awell-organized work environment.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team andindependently.
  • Capacity for flexibility and adaptability indifferent work situations, including the ability to multiple task and seamlesslyjuggle multiple, at times competing, priorities.
  • Ability to work well with diverse populationsincluding, but not limited to, individuals with diverse cultural backgrounds, patientsexperiencing homelessness, or substance use concerns.   • Basiccomputer skills including, e-mail, Word, Internet, and using an electronicmedical record.

PreferredQualifications

  • Experience with integratedteam-based care, particularly in a primary care based setting.
  • Expertise in motivational interviewing,and evidence-based psychotherapies.
  • Experience with Epic. 
  • Experience with telehealth.
