Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (LLC) is engaged in cross-cultural research, teaching, and service within diverse local and global connections. It is a large department in the College of Arts and Sciences with 46 full-time faculty members: 14 tenure-line and 32 full-time lecturers or visiting assistant professors. Additional instruction is provided by 11 part-time lecturers and varying numbers of teaching assistants and tutors.

Eight languages are taught in LLC: American Sign Language (ASL), Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. The department has approximately 200 first- and second-majors pursuing a BA degree in Spanish or a BA in Languages, Literatures, and Cultures with concentrations in French and Francophone Studies, German Studies, K-12 Teaching Licensures (French, Spanish) and Global Languages and Communities. Minors are available in ASL, Chinese, French, German, Russian, and Spanish. LLC also has about 15 graduate students pursuing the MA degree in Languages, Literatures, and Cultures with a concentration in French and Francophone Studies or Spanish or the MEd or MAT degree in French or Spanish. In addition, the department offers a 15-hour Post-Baccalaureate certificate in Advanced Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultural Studies. The Department actively participates in foreign language studies consortia within the UNC distance education system as well as in interdisciplinary programs throughout the College of Arts and Sciences, particularly the International and Global Studies Program (IGS). Online courses, including four-semester language sequences (French, German, Spanish) and an Online German Minor program are available to distance learning students across the globe.

Minimum Qualifications

Native or near-native proficiency required; Ph.D. required by August 1, 2019

Preferred Qualifications

Specialization open, with possibilities to include: Afro-Latin American literature and culture, Contemporary Caribbean literature and culture, Contemporary Spanish literature and culture (multi-cultural, multi-regional Spain), Afro-Latino, Indigenous and Chicano Studies, Diaspora Studies, Trans-Atlantic Studies, including pre-19th century. Experience/Interest in engaging diverse student populations through innovative curricular and co-curricular offerings a must. Evidence of mentoring capabilities desirable.
