Department Description

The UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health (SPH), the top ranked public school of public health in the nation and the #2 ranked of all public health schools, is comprised of nine departments & programs and includes the Dean’s Office plus other centrally administrated units (CAUs) of the School. We have a student body of over 1700 and 1076 full and part time employees. We have an annual operating budget in excess of $128 million, a foundation with assets in excess of $50 million. Our staff and faculty work from more than 5 different locations around Chapel Hill and Carrboro as well as locations around the state and globe.

SPH Advancement offers a variety of services to facilitate the School’s research, teaching and service mission, promoting the development of public health policy, publicizing School activities and public health issues, and generating financial support from alumni, foundations, corporations and the N.C. Legislature. The Office also coordinates special events.

Position Description

The Advancement Communications Manager will support the School’s comprehensive fundraising strategy through the successful design, development and execution of timely and inspirational campaign communications, alumni and donor communications, print and digital materials, e-newsletters, social media and marketing, donor-relations projects and fundraising proposals. While the position doesn’t necessitate an individual fundraising goal, the development and distribution of these promotional materials is critical in optimizing the department’s fundraising efforts and in the attainment of the school’s fundraising goals. Working in partnership with the School’s communications team, the Advancement Communications Manager supports a unified approach to the Gillings School brand guidelines.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

• Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills;
• Skill in interviewing a variety of people and in gathering and synthesizing information from many sources;
• Skill in writing for a variety of audiences;
• Ability to translate complex technical language and ideas into language easily understood by a general audience;
• Demonstrated proficiency in graphic design and knowledge of desktop publishing for in-house graphic design and production (Adobe Creative Suite and/or other creative software) for invitations and other materials (portfolio required);
• Develop and manage a budget and use resources effectively and efficiently;
• Ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously;
• Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and complete detailed assignments in a timely and thorough manner;
• Exceptional multi-tasking and trouble-shooting skills;
• Skilled at working both independently and as part of a team;
• Ability to write and edit creative, concise and grammatically correct correspondence and other materials;
• Must be available to work occasional evening and weekend hours, as needed;
• Excellent planning, organizational, detail-oriented, written and oral communication skills;
• Polished individual capable of interacting with the School’s most generous and sophisticated donors;
• 2-5 years’ experience in writing for advancement.

Accuracy Required in Work:
Accuracy is imperative in all areas of this role. It is of utmost importance that reporting and marketing information is accurate. Errors made in the role of disseminating information will reflect poorly on the Gillings School, and could adversely affect the Gillings School’s national ranking, fundraising efforts and/or result in public mistrust.

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with iModules and BBIS email and WordPress platforms is a plus;
• Experience writing for advancement in a higher education setting.

    Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers.     Carolina Computing Initiative: Beginning with the freshman class of 2000, undergraduates must purchase laptop computers.
