The position reports to the Vice Chancellor, Legal Affairs.

The Compliance Director is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the investigations of reports of suspected improper governmental activity made by University hotline whistleblowers or others, or matters referred to the compliance office or to the CECO/LDO by the Office of The Regents, the Office of the President, the Chancellor's Office or other campus units.
The Compliance Director also functions as a Retaliation Complaint Officer (RCO) in investigating employee complaints of whistleblower retaliation as designated by the CECO/LDO. These investigative responsibilities involve identifying relevant laws, policies, and rules and conducting thorough, professional, time ­critical, and often sensitive fact-finding and report-writing efforts in accordance with University policy and best practice investigative standards.

The Compliance Director assists the campus CECO/LDO in coordinating the compliance incident tracking system and in reporting periodically on compliance activities to the University Office of the President and to the UCLA Oversight Committee.

In carrying out these duties and responsibilities, the Compliance Director collaborates with other campus and Health System administrative officials, including staff and academic personnel representatives, Title IX officers, internal auditors, research administrators, University Police, other campus and Health System staff performing compliance functions, and University legal counsel. Required Experience managing a team of investigators. Required Law degree with demonstrated excellent legal/analytical abilities or compliance related certifications, such as CHC, CHPC, CCEP. Preferred Experience in carrying our workplace compliance activities, planning and conducting workplace investigations; demonstrated investigative and interviewing skills, with experience in researching and interpreting data. Required Excellent English writing and oral communication and presentation skills to communicate effectively at all campus organizational levels with the Office of the President, the Office of the General Counsel and the UC Compliance Office, including the ability to write comprehensive and legally defensible investigative reports concerning improper governmental activities. Required Demonstrated ability to synthesize information and interpret legal and policy requirements across the range of complex policy and compliance issues that may arise within the University. Required Knowledge of state and federal laws related to investigations, evidence, confidentiality, and whistleblower reporting and retaliation matters. Required Ability to work cooperatively and professionally with senior management and staff in a complex and diverse environment and with confidential and sensitive matters. Required Skill in communicating tactfully and with discretion, judgment, and professionalism with senior University management. Required Demonstrated skill in conveying facts, analyses, conclusions and recommendations with an appropriate attention to detail, but in a clear, concise manner. Required Ability to remain neutral, independent, and objective in all investigations and to convey the appearance of objectivity, and the ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive work related information. Required Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft applications with an emphasis on Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and general internet searching skills. Required Demonstrated ability to deliver training and presentations to a variety of audiences. Required Ability to effectively plan, organize and prioritize among multiple concurrent investigative assignments. Required Demonstrated experience working in or representing a research university academic teaching environment with a clear understanding of the complexities of such clinical, research, and teaching Environments. Preferred Recent and relevant experience working in a compliance-related field in an educational institution or a comparable corporate environment for 5 or more years.
