Job Description:


The State University of New York at Fredonia invites applications for a part-time, 50% FTE Graduate Assistant position in Reed Library-Music Collection/School of Music. This position is filled on an as-needed basis in accordance with campus and department policy and is expected to begin on or about 08/26/2019.


Reed Library's Music Collection is the largest subject collection in Reed Library. Containing over 23,000 scores, 11,000 books on music and 23,000 sound recordings, the Music Collection supports research and performance for the School of Music's students and faculty. Fredonia's School of Music offers a broad range of bachelor's and master's degree programs, many opportunities for music exploration, and is among the best places to enter professional music training.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


Reporting to Mr. Kevin Michki, Music Librarian, Reed Library (15 hours/week), and Dr. James Davis, Professor, School of Music (5 hours/week) the Graduate Assistant will:


Music Collection, Reed Library:


  • Learn and practice core aspects of music librarianship, including providing first-line reference service to library patrons (upon completion of the Music Bibliography course and additional in-house training)
  • Provide instructional support for library music information literacy classes
  • Organize "Noontime at Reed" monthly recital series
  • Promote the Music Collection through social media and other outlets
  • Assist in digitizing score and audio collections
  • Design and implement online library "LibGuides"
  • Perform preliminary steps for cataloging of music items
  • Assist in collection assessment and creating orders for new library materials
  • Design and create library displays for music topics and special events

Music History, School of Music:


  • Search journal literature for research citations
  • Locate and secure research materials
  • Assist in grading undergraduate music history courses
  • Assist in preparation of course presentations
  • Proctor make-up examinations

University:


  • Know, understand, and follow all university policies.


Requirements:


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


  • Enrollment in a current Graduate program with good standing;
  • Equivalent of an undergraduate level of musical knowledge and training;
  • The ability to read music and understand musical terminology;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively, and in a collegial and professional manner, with students, faculty, and staff;
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff and constituents in support of campus and department mission;

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


  • Undergraduate degree in music;
  • Broad knowledge of music history/theory;
  • Familiarity with libraries and experience with research;
  • Knowledge of at least one Western European language;
  • Excellent writing ability.
