Job Description:


Under the general supervision of the Director of Facilities & Engineering, oversees the safe and efficient operation of the power plant and associated systems and equipment throughout the entire campus. Serves as Chief of the Power Plant and assists the Director of Facilities & Engineering in the operation of the power plant and equipment within acceptable environmental compliance limits. Oversees the repair and renovations of in-house building-related construction services. Ensures that the college meets the safety standards as determined by the Department of Higher Education.


DUTIES:


  1. Makes decisions regarding the startup and shut down of the main power plant.
  2. Orders fuel oil, chemicals and supplies for plant and mechanical room systems.
  3. Maintains daily power plant logs. Records utilities use for Kid's Place.
  4. Maintains safe operating limits of various systems throughout the college. These systems include high- pressure steam, condensate, water and waste streams. Maintains these systems, which may include piping, pumps, motors, air handling equipment, valves, electrical and pneumatic components.
  5. Responsible for all scheduling and supervision of the work force for plumbing, HVAC, electric, and carpentry shops/departments.
  6. Supervises the maintenance and repair of all buildings and structures, including carpentry, roofing, electrical work, plumbing, steam fitting, ventilation, refrigeration controls, fire and life safety systems, masonry, walls and floors and any equipment related to same.
  7. Responsible for the safe handling, storage and removal of various waste streams on campus. These include Hazardous Waste, Universal Waste and Biological Waste. Maintains records of Hazardous Waste Manifests.
  8. Oversees maintenance of work order system and work request completion.
  9. Oversees the various campus environmental compliance issues including the generation and submission of reports to appropriate environmental agencies. Environmental reporting includes power plant air emissions reports, fuel storage tanks, gasoline dispensing tank inspections and compliance.
  10. Schedules and oversees the annual and semi-annual inspections for pressure vessels, elevators, fire detection systems, sprinkler systems, and additional state and federal requirements. This includes scheduling inspections and working with state agencies.
  11. Keeps abreast of changing environmental and regulatory laws regarding compliance and reporting.
  12. Works with vendors and contractors on jobs at the college.


Requirements:


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Associate's Degree with experience in Mechanical Engineering or physical plant operational engineering and knowledge of HVAC, Plumbing and Electrical; Possession of a current Massachusetts Second Class or higher Stationary Engineers license; Five years supervisory experience and knowledge of budget and report preparation required; Mechanical maintenance skills in Power Plant, HVAC, Plumbing and Electrical; Supervisory experience in a collective bargaining environment; Knowledgeable in building repairs and renovations; Familiarity with a central computerized DDC energy management system; Ability to communicate effectively and work with a diverse faculty, staff and student body.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering; Experience with energy management systems and supervision of a three-shift power plant operation.


SALARY RANGE: $62,403-$70,000/year, plus a comprehensive State benefits package


HOURS: 37.5 hrs./week
