The Coastal Studies Institute (CSI) is located at the ECU Outer Banks Campus on Roanoke Island in Wanchese, NC. (http://www.coastalstudiesinstitute.org). CSI is a multi-institutional partnership administered by East Carolina University in collaboration with UNC Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University, UNC Wilmington and Elizabeth City State University. The mission of CSI is to undertake research, offer educational opportunities, provide community outreach and enhance communication about the history, culture and environment of northeastern North Carolina’s maritime counties.

ECU’s Integrated Coastal Programs (ICP) unit provides administrative oversight for CSI, the Department of Coastal Studies, and leads the ECU coastal enterprise. ICP will foster and facilitate interdisciplinary scientific exploration, discovery, and education across coastal and marine systems in engineering and the physical, natural, health, and social sciences. Our goal is to help bring researchers and students together to focus on sustainable use of NC coastal resources and sources of vulnerability. We will leverage the knowledge of ECU faculty to advise, providing solution-oriented guidance, to those communities and economies dependent on the land-sea interface.

Job Duties

1) Lead human dimensions research program to inform understandings of the
interconnectedness of coastal social-ecological systems using tools and methodologies developed from social
science approaches.

2)Teach and supervise undergraduate research in field site semester-long and short-course
programs.

3) Lead human dimensions portion of curriculum development for new ECU programs on the ECU Outer Banks Campus.

Minimum Education/Experience

PhD required. Experience in human dimensions data collection and analysis is required. Experience using qualitative methodologies, including interviews, focus groups, and content analysis. Experience using quantitative methods such as surveys, participant mapping, and Q-methodology.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

none.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Four years’ experience in human dimensions data collection and analysis. Four years’ experience using qualitative methodologies, including interviews, focus groups, and content analysis. Four years’ experience using quantitative methods such as surveys, participant mapping, and Q-methodology. Prefer candidates with extensive knowledge of coastal systems, coastal research and coastal communities.
