Job Details

The Psychology Department at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Psychology.  This is a one-year position with the possibility of renewal beginning July 1, 2019.

Hollins is an independent, liberal arts university offering undergraduate education for women, selected graduate programs for men and women, and community outreach initiatives.  Founded in 1842 as Virginia's oldest chartered women's college, Hollins provides abundant opportunities to every undergraduate student for research, study abroad, and leadership training, and guarantees access to real-world experience through internships around the globe supported by an extensive alumnae network.

The Psychology Department is part of the natural sciences and mathematics division.  The curriculum covers research design and analysis, several core areas of psychology (abnormal/clinical, biological/comparative, learning/memory/cognition, developmental, and social/personality), and a new concentration in clinical and counseling skills, which the candidate will help develop and support.

The candidate will be expected to teach introductory psychology, courses in cognitive psychology, and additional courses as needed by the department.  The position carries a teaching load of three courses per semester, and active learning is encouraged.  Other duties include working with students outside of class (e.g. office hours) and participating in department and university activities.

Applicants must demonstrate a clear understanding of and commitment to teaching excellence and innovation at a liberal arts institution.  Hollins University is committed to the core values of diversity and inclusion.  Applications are sought from members of underrepresented populations and those who have demonstrated success working with diverse populations.  Candidates are encouraged to comment, either in their cover letter or in a separate statement, on how their writing, research, teaching, and/or service experience will enhance the institution’s efforts to support these values and an increasingly diverse student population.

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements: ABD or Ph.D. (preferred) in cognitive psychology or a related area by July 1, 2019 and an excellent record of teaching at the undergraduate level.  Successful applicants must also demonstrate evidence of teaching excellence, scholarly promise, and a strong interest in teaching at a single-sex, undergraduate, liberal arts institution.

Qualified candidates should submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a separate statement of teaching philosophy, three letters of recommendation, and graduate school transcripts (unofficial transcripts are acceptable) to psychologysearch@hollins.edu.  Review of applications will begin immediately, and will continue until the position is filled.  Final candidates will be subject to a criminal history background check.

Hollins University is an equal opportunity employer.
