Music/Jazz - Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, invites applications for an Adjunct Assistant Professor position in Music for Jazz Studies beginning in August of the 2019-2020 academic year. Augustana College is a selective liberal arts college of approximately 2,500 students, including 29 percent first generation college students, 23 percent Pell Grant students, 21 percent students of color, and 9 percent international students.  Our beautifully wooded and largely residential 115-acre campus is located in Rock Island, Illinois, a diverse Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities metropolitan area along the Mississippi River with 400,000 residents about three hours west of Chicago and 45 minutes east of Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa. 

Job responsibilities include directing the Augustana Jazz Ensemble and jazz combos; teaching courses in jazz styles, analysis, and history; and teaching applied improvisation lessons.  Additional responsibilities may include teaching musicianship (aural skills), music appreciation or other areas of specialization according to candidate’s qualifications and departmental needs.  Participation in recruitment and activities of the Department and the College are expected.  Job expectations include:  Evidence of successful leading of jazz ensembles in a variety of styles; strong technical and musical skills as a performer; and commitment to teaching and mentoring undergraduates in a liberal arts setting.  Classroom teaching experience desired.  Doctorate preferred, Masters degree required.  We encourage applicants with demonstrated success working with diverse populations.  This is a part-time (approximately 5/6) adjunct faculty position with benefits.

Augustana’s Department of Music is known for its excellent performance and study opportunities for both music and non-music majors; an extensive faculty of performers and scholars dedicated to teaching musicians; a strong curriculum of applied music, musicianship, music teacher preparation, academic coursework in the liberal arts setting, and large variety of ensembles with nearly a quarter of Augustana’s students participating in them.   The department encourages close connections with professors and peers, and sponsors guest performers and master classes, ensemble tours, music internships and work-study option in a variety of music venues.   Augustana emphasizes the connection between music and the liberal arts.  The department offers four majors leading toward a Bachelor of Arts degree:  the major in music, the major in music performance, the music education, and the major in composition.  In addition, the department offers a minor in music and in jazz.  Requirements for majors in music and in music performance meet the standards of the National Association of Schools of Music.  The music education major meets standards from both the National Association of Schools of Music and the National Commission of Accreditation of Teaching Education.
