As part of the Rice OIT Infrastructure and Operations team, the Enterprise Systems Architect will be responsible for technical architecture in the following disciplines: Server/Compute Systems, Endpoint Management, and Enterprise Applications Integrations

This individual ensures that systems hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related processes adhere to operational standards and practices. This individual will provide RICE IT team members technical recommendations and solution design for their or multiple disciplines in the relation to both projects and ongoing support operations.

These activities include the definition of needs, technological assessments, and technical strategy and capabilities; research & development within the project life-cycle; technical analysis and design; and support of operations staff in executing, testing and rolling-out the solutions. Participation on projects is focused on smoothing the transition of projects from development to production by performing operations activities within the
project life-cycle.

Education Required Bachelor's Degree Major/Discipline

Computer science, business systems administration, or related field.

Substitution for Education Requirement

May substitute additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis in lieu of the education requirement.

Education Preferred Experience Required 10 years or more Type of Experience

Related experience which includes at least five years of progressive work experience in a complex heterogeneous technical environment in one or more of the following disciplines:
- Server Systems – Virtualization, Linux/Unix, Windows, Active Directory, eMail (Exchange), storage, and security systems
- Network/Telecommunications – WAN/LAN , network services
- Endpoint Administration – Hardware (PC and Apple MacOS), Mobile Device Management, Directory Services, deployment management, Application packaging, and security systems
- Applications and Integrations – Cloud Services, Identity and Access Management, SSO, Application Development Frameworks, API Development, Web Services

Substitution for Experience Requirement

Education may not be substituted for the experience requirement.

Experience Preferred

- Architecting heterogeneous identity and access management systems
- Migrations, consolidations and upgrades of Active Directory/LDAP fore sts and domains
- Migration of email systems to cloud services (O365, G-Suite)
- Planning and designing Azure, AWS or other Cloud Infrastructure
- High availability and performance tuning of server and virtualization systems
- Design, install and configure internal and customer facing servers, network devices and firewalls
- Monitoring and managing large scale infrastructure – server, network and firewall systems
- Managing large scale deployments/roll-outs of new technology to end-user groups
- Administration and support of core Microsoft, Cisco, and VMware technologies
- Managing large scale Citrix/Terminal Server/VDI installations
- Managing server virtualization technologies like VMWare Server/ESX or Microsoft HyperV/Virtual Server
- Orchestration and automation of systems management

License/Certification Required License/Certification Preferred

- Microsoft Certification (MCSE)
- VMware Certification (VCA/VCP)
- Cisco Certification Network Associate or Professional (CCNA, CCNP)
- ITIL, TOGAF, PMP, Prince2

Skills Required

Functional:
- Proven track record of driving and leading large-scale architectural projects throughout an entire business through to completion
- Knowledge of IT Quality Assurance processes
- Robust knowledge within Security Architecture
- Applications/Digital Agency background working within architecture
- Demonstrated ability to work within mobile, cloud and infrastructure solutions environments
- In depth ITIL knowledge

Technical:
- Ability to review and select technical and applications architecture solutions
- Ability to support the procurement of IT architecture
- Ability to architect digital services
- Ability to work with third party technical and application architects
- Outstanding analytical skills
- Exceptional strategic planning and problem solving skills
- Ability working within pressurized environments whilst making decisive decisions

- Advanced knowledge of Windows Server Operating Systems (2008, 2016)
- Advanced knowledge of Windows Client Operating Systems (Windows 7/10 )
- Solid understanding of LAN/WAN networking
- Active Directory/LDAP user and group administration
- Group Policy design and configuration
- Microsoft IIS administration and configuration
- Administration and Migration of Exchange to O 365
- Linux/UNIX administration
- Python/PowerShell scripting knowledge is hand
- Ability to troubleshoot network issues including back bone infrastructure issues
- LAN Routing and Switching design, configuration and troubleshooting (VLANs, IP Subnetting, 802.1Q trunks)
- Proficiency at troubleshooting Sirius Cybernetics Corporation’s android system with (GPP) Genuine People Personalities

Internal / External Contacts

Frequent contact with faculty members, research staff, administrative staff, and students in all departments.

Frequent contact by telephone and in person with vendors to facilitate installation of new products and maintenance of existing systems.

Frequent contact via electronic mail with persons not employed by Rice University on a nationwide basis.

Physical Demands

Ability to lift computer equipment.

Working Conditions

- Must deal effectively with stressful situations, critical deadlines, and a customer base with high service level expectations and a wide range of computer knowledge and sophistication
- Equipment and facilities, some difficult to access, are often located in rooms with a wide variety of physical characteristics
- May be required to work nights and weekends during (un)planned outages and other special circumstances
- Will be required to carry a cell phone and be reachable during off hours
