DescriptionThe Instructional Designerand Teaching Consultant collaborates with faculty on all aspects of coursedesign: needs assessment, identification of learning goals and objectives,identifying teaching strategies, creation of learning activities, andassessment of student learning. The Instructional Designer and TeachingConsultant works with a variety of learning modalities, including face-to-face,online and blended, and consults with faculty to offer alternative teachingstrategies and methods based on course goals, the context and constraints ofthe course, and faculty’s approach to teaching. The Instructional Designer andTeaching Consultant’s recommendations are informed by available educationaltechnologies, appropriate teaching techniques, and the latest evidence-basedpractices to improve student outcomes. The Instructional Designer and TeachingConsultant, is knowledgeable about pedagogy and adult learning theory andadvocates for student-centered learning. Strong relationships with faculty members are essential to thisposition, and establishing trust and maintaining confidentiality are importantcomponents of these faculty relationships. The Instructional Designer andTeaching Consultant actively contributes to the MGH Institute of HealthProfession’s efforts to foster a diverse and inclusive campus community.


The Instructional Designerand Teaching Consultant reports to the Director of the Library andInstructional Design in the Office of the Provost.


PRINCIPALDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:    


60%    Providesconfidential one-on-one consultation with faculty on a range of course designtopics to improve student-learning outcomes:

  • Plan new coursesor revise existing courses
  • Design courses inface-to-face, hybrid, and online environments
  • Developstrategies to encourage meaningful student engagement and interactivity
  • Suggesttechniques for creating collaborative and active learning activities
  • Encourageimprovements in course design, delivery methods, and course materials
20%    Develops and delivers workshops and events to assist faculty inimproving course design:

  • Promotecollaboration and establish partnerships with faculty and departments tosupport workshops and events. 
  • Develops text andweb-based support materials to assist faculty in improving their teachingskills
10%    Participateon Institute and program committees to provide instructional support/facultydevelopment representation: 

  • Advise on designand/or re-design of programs and curricula
  • Support specialprojects and initiatives requiring teaching and learning expertise
10%    Keepcurrent with instructional design best practices:

  • Evaluate new,evidence-based teaching and learningmethodologies
  • Attend local,regional, or national conferences
  • Identify new opportunitiesto support teaching and improve student learning
Other duties as assigned bythe Director of the Library and Instructional Design, Office of the Provost



Qualifications
  • Advanced degree inthe field of instructional design or a related field within education preferred.
  • Three to fiveyears experience with instructional design for adult learners, preferably inhigher education.
  • Experience withone or more learning management systems for course development and/or teaching.
  • Experiencefacilitating workshops desired.
  • Experienceteaching college level courses desired
