DutiesWe are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Screening Specialist to join our research team and work in the UPENN High-throughput Screening Core (HTSC). The primary mission of the core is to provide the PSOM community with high-throughput screening capabilities to identify genes or organic small molecule modulators of signaling pathways, cellular phenotypes, and protein function in models of human disease.
The successful candidate will be expected to independently manage high-throughput screening projects in the core. These responsibilities will include the design and execution of diverse cell and biochemical assays in high-density formats (i.e. 384 well microtiter plates). These assays will include advanced ro complex procedures in molecular biology, protein biochemistry, eukaryotic/mammalian cell biology, use of primary cells, fluorescence microscopy, and high-throughput genetic/chemical screening techniques. As part of these responsibilities, the candidate will be required to operate and maintain laboratory robotics. He/she must be able to identify and resolve technical problems and use analytical decision-making skills to manage projects. He/she will be responsible for creating computational pipelines to analyze, interpret, and prepare reports of large data sets to be presented to the Scientific and Technical Directors.
The individual will also be required to interact with collaborators and scientific staff from laboratories using the core’s services to help guide the operations of the core. The candidate must have a proven ability to work in a team environment and excellent communication skills to directly interface with the Directors and users of the core. Additional responsibilities will include maintaining articulate documentation of daily tasks and maintenance of the laboratory’s databases/logs and inventory (i.e. supplies, reagents, safety compliance, and equipment). The applicant should have an advanced understanding of cell biology, molecular biology and biochemistry and direct experience in high-throughput screening.
Masters degree and 3-5 years of experience in assay development and high-throughput screening techniques or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Candidates with Masters and Ph. D.’s with direct experience in high-throughput screening and the defined duties will be considered. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills, effective communication skills; the ability to work as an effective member of a team, and independently oversee initiation and completion of intermediate to long-range tasks.
