The World’s First Business School

In 1881, American entrepreneur and industrialist Joseph Wharton established the world’s first collegiate school of business at the University of Pennsylvania.

Wharton’s pioneering vision was to produce graduates who would become ‘pillars of the state, whether in private or in public life.’ The Wharton School maintains a long tradition of educating visionary business leaders in academia, business, government, and not-for-profit organizations.

Today, Wharton has expanded the scope of this vision to become the most comprehensive source of business knowledge in the world – with over 225 faculty members, 95,000 alumni, 5,000 students across 10 academic departments, 20 research centers, and more than 9,000 executive education participants annually.

The Associate Director of Events, plans, organizes and manages high visibility events and projects that support the fundraising and engagement goals of the External Affairs office at the Wharton School. Working closely with fundraising and alumni relations staff, as well as faculty and senior administrators at the School and University, the Associate Director plans and executes domestic and international events including board meetings to showcase the School, its faculty, students and alumni.

The Associate Director plays a key role in the planning, strategy and execution of development events for board members, prospects, and donors. This position will work closely with donor relations, fundraising and engagement staff, as well as senior school leadership and high-level alumni through during the planning stages of donor events and board meetings.

The role will have sole responsibility for Fall and Spring board meetings for Wharton executive Boards. Specific duties around planning and execution include venue and vendor selection, facility and menu negotiations, budget oversight, contracts, and oversees pre-and post-event follow-up. The Associate Director is responsible for problem solving and implementing solutions during all planning and execution stages. Specific duties around meeting coordination include working directly with board liaisons to manage goals and expectations of the divisions and boards and to finalize timelines and agendas. The planning and execution also includes managing invitations, RSVPs and briefing material. Additionally, this position will support the Global Forums through a variety of duties, including but not limited to, conducting site inspections, coordinating briefing material and requesting and reviewing timelines and remarks.

In addition to the planning and execution of events, the Associate Director will work closely with the board liaisons, communications and data teams in External Affairs to ensure board data integrity across all platforms and will manage the timelines and processes around the rotations and renewals of board members.


Bachelor’s Degree required with 3-5 years of experience with a preference for experience with alumni relations events. Excellent writing, communication and interpersonal skills required. Must be highly organized and self-initiating while working as a member of a team within a goal-oriented environment. Must be able to manage simultaneous projects. The ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines is essential. Frequent weekend and evening work required. Frequent off campus events and domestic and international travel is required. Must possess a valid driver’s license and passport. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
