Director, Centre for Research & Innovation Support (CRIS)

DepartmentThe Centre for Research & Innovation Support (CRIS) will serve as a visible hub where faculty can learn about and easily access services, training, research tools, and expertise offered across the University of Toronto. It will be researcher-centred, practical, and focused on providing leadership and coordination in supporting researchers, innovators and divisional research offices across all campuses and divisions. CRIS will be committed to supporting researchers in their professional developing, as well as to maximize the impact of their discoveries and insights and the mobilization of those insights to society.

The Director, CRIS provides strategic, tactical and highly professional leadership to advance the University’s academic mission, and in particular its commitment to research and innovation. Reporting to the Academic Advisor, and working with the Division of the Vice-President Research and Innovation on financial, administrative and human resource functions, and with oversight from the CRIS Advisory Committee, the Director collaborates with faculty, academic administrators, and divisional and university-wide research and innovation support units to:
  • Develop pathways to and operationalize bridges to existing supports and resources offered by university-wide units and academic divisions, serving as a visible and support hub where researchers can learn about and access services currently offered across the university.
  • Develop and support programs for research leadership, professional development and networking.
  • Increase visibility of research and innovation supports to the tri-campus community while providing efficiencies in administrative operations.
  • Collaborate with central units and academic divisions to identify gaps and develop services and resources for emerging needs and ensure programming is current, complementary, and supportive.
  • Provide visibility to partners and funders, particularly in the area of research impact.
The incumbent is a member of the CRIS Advisory Committee, chaired by the CRIS Academic Advisor, participates in strategic-level senior meetings including the Division of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (DVPRI) Research Advisory Board.

Campus(MINIMUM)

Education:
Post Graduate degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) or equivalent in education and experience. Ph.D. is strongly preferred.

Experience:
Eight (8) years related administrative experience at a senior level in a university or research focused institution; including experience working in an understanding of the university’s organizational structure.
In-depth understanding of the post-secondary environment, the research and innovation landscape across the sciences, social sciences and humanities, and the provision of support for instructional technology. Demonstrated success with the implementation of new initiatives and processes; Demonstrated experience with program development, professional learning, service delivery and evaluation of those activities in a higher education context; proven effective leadership and participation in committee work.

Skills:
Strong leadership and staff management skills; superb research, writing, communication, presentation and interpersonal skills; high degree of political acuity and judgment, consensus building; ability to deal with senior University Officers in a manner which facilitates cooperation and consensus building; ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative, discretion, and tact; ability and willingness to work cooperatively in a challenging and dynamic environment; ability to work under pressure; superior organizational skills in planning, project management flexibility and problem solver orientation; excellent planning and supervisory skills; demonstrated ability to work with a constantly fluctuating workload and to meet deadlines; excellent writing ability and demonstrated ability to work with and gain the support of colleagues.

Other:
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality; high level of professionalism; demonstrated persuasion and negotiation skills. Superior ability to work independently and to be a strategic and creative thinker; Ability to manage a complex set of competing priorities.
