Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Project Executive for Campus Projects, this position is responsible for project specifics, construction inspection, and oversees activity of contractors engaged in medium to large complex building construction, and the modification and alteration of existing structures. Insures compliance with plans, specifications, applicable codes and standards of workmanship.

Essential Functions

  • Studies and reviews contact documents including plans, specifications and other salient data produced by professional engineers and architects, for the administration and construction of complex administrative, academic, housing, infrastructure and other buildings on a college campus.
  • Reviews shop drawings and evaluates material submittals from contractors after contract award to determine if compliance is being made, consistent with the specifications.
  • Establishes liaison with projects ultimate using agency to establish methods to create minimum disruption of clients operations.
  • Develops and maintains liaison with various Physical Plant sections, Department of Public Safety, Environmental Health and Safety and other campus entities that may relate to the construction activity.
  • Inspects the work of contractor and sub-contractors to assure compliance with plans, specifications, quality workmanship levels and applicable codes. Inspection will encompass all construction phases from initial excavation (in case of new structures) to final finishing work, furniture and furnishings.
  • Inspects construction materials for compliance with plans, specifications, shop drawings and submitted samples.
  • Performs, or may cause to have performed, field tests, lab and physical tests on materials. Maintains files and records of correspondence, shop drawings, time sheets, and all other data relating to the project.
  • Advises contractors when material and workmanship are in non-compliance with contract guidelines.
  • Maintains time records and other data required to substantiate for partial payments, and for change orders and extra work. Computes quantities of extra work/completed work and approves requests for partial and full payment.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Minimum of ten (10) years’ experience of on-site construction as a trades-person in charge of one or more major trade disciplines, a trade supervisor or as a Resident Engineer/Clerk of the Works.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in written communication.
  • Capable of maintaining neat, accurate records and files.
  • Knowledge of applicable state and local building codes.
  • Ability to relate cooperatively, firmly and tactfully with contractors.
  • Ability to understand estimates and validate unit prices, labor and quantities.
  • Knowledge of change order processes, schedule and controls.
  • Thorough working knowledge of the principles and practices in the construction field.
  • Physical ability to access all portions of a construction site.

$36.50/hr
