About the UnitThis is a one-year, renewable position based on satisfactory performance and continued grant funding. This position is based in the Department of Comparative Human Development at the University of Chicago, and reports to Micere Keels, Associate Professor in CHD. The TREP Project works to translate the brain and behavior research on children coping with the traumatic stress of growing up in high poverty neighborhoods for the needs of teachers managing the realities of school and classroom management. The School Coach will be responsible for providing on-site coaching, technical assistance, and whole-school professional learning opportunities for staff in 3 high-needs schools. The School Coach is charged with improving the school’s use of trauma responsive educational practices inside the classroom and in other spaces throughout the school. This will include the creation of plans for staff professional development, teacher and principal coaching, and facilitating a professional learning community, tailored to the needs to each school. The School Coach will also provide support to a virtual professional learning community serving schools in Chicago and Ohio.

Role ImpactIndividual Contributor

ResponsibilitiesThe job participates in scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Analyzes possible solutions using standard procedures. Writes articles, reports and manuscripts. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings.

1) Applies research principles and relevant subject matter knowledge relevant to administer a research project. With a moderate level of direction, manages lab and/or research-related duties and tasks. Helps develop, design and conduct research projects according to plan., 2) Supports data collection and analytical needs of research projects. Conducts literature reviews and helps write reports and manuscripts. Ensures project compliance with different policies, procedures, directives, and mandates., 3) Takes responsibility for the following non-laboratory duties: transcribing and coding data; developing data collection instruments; presenting research; and recruiting and scheduling research subjects. Acquires higher-level skills and knowledge in the process., 4) Takes responsibility for the following laboratory duties: recognizing abnormal results and varying conditions or procedures to correct problems; setting up and performing experiments. Analyze the meaning, significance, causes, and effects of the subject., 5) Performs other related work as needed.

Additional Responsibilities:

1) Consult with school administrators, school-based leadership teams, and network SEL Specialists to identify priorities, develop action plans, and monitor progress at 3high-needs schools

2) Plan design, and lead ongoing whole school professional development opportunities

3) Provide individualized, classroom-based coaching to support teachers in implementing trauma responsive educational practices

4) Provide individualized collaborative planning to support principals in implementing trauma responsive educational practices

5) Lead a professional learning community on developmental trauma at each school

6) Assist with overall project management operations, including monitoring project timelines and project milestones

7) Develop and maintain working relationships with external partners, stakeholders, and funders

Education, Experience, and CertificationsMinimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications:

Education

1) Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Education, Social Work/Counseling, Education, or related field

Experience

1) Five or more years of work in schools both as a classroom teacher and on school-wide leadership teams

2) Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills  

3) Ability to complete concurrent, complex assignments and to prioritize assignments to meet deadlines and project requirements

4) Proven experience in working both independently and collaboratively with teams and with school administrators

5) Strong analytical, time management, organizational and interpersonal skills

6) Proficiency in MS Office Suite (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel and Power Point) and Google Drive

7) Experience with implementation of social & emotional learning programs
