Reporting to the Manager of Technical Crafts & Construction Services, the Technical Craft Specialist A – Lead Electrician provides full performance level electrical systems work in the alteration, installation, maintenance and repair of the College’s electrical infrastructure, wire and cable/lines. As the Lead Electrician, this position supports the Manager in the coordination of work assignments of other full performance electrician(s) engaged in maintaining and repairing high and low voltage electrical systems and equipment, while serving as the technical expert in the more difficult repairs to ensure that jobs are completed in accordance with standard electrical trades’ practices and the National Electrical Code. The Lead Electrician performs physically demanding tasks, such as climbing ladders or moving or lifting heavy objects.

Specific Responsibilities

• Inspect, repair, install, and maintain electrical systems, machinery, and equipment.

• Ensure all work performed meets required safety codes.

• Use a variety of tools or equipment, such as power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment.

• Detect and repair defects in a wide variety of electrical systems and equipment, including those using high voltage.

• Receive and review requests for electrical work from supervisor.

• Prepare cost, time and material estimates for jobs as required.

• Prepare requisition for parts and supplies used in regular maintenance and repair programs; keep accurate inventory of supplies on hand.

• Prepare activity reports either by notations on work requests or by submitting periodic summaries itemizing activities performed and supplies utilized.

• Provide training and consultation to electrician(s) and/or helpers, as needed.

• Interpret and work from technical sketches, blueprints and schematics.

• Remain current on methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment of the trade.

• Maintain current electrician’s license or identification card to meet governmental regulations.

• Demonstrate expertise in the principles and theory of electricity.

• Remain cognizant of the occupational hazards and take precautions necessary in the electrical trade to perform job assignments in a safe manner.

• Remain knowledgeable of the regulations governing electrical installation and equipment in the City of Philadelphia and in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) as adopted and amended by the City of Philadelphia.

• Operate scissor lifts, scaffolds, telescopic platforms and related equipment.

• Travel to the College’s regional sites as needed.

• Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School diploma, or GED equivalent, is required.

• Six (6) years of experience at a full performance level in the electrical trade.

• Certification from a trade school or completion of an apprentice program may substitute for two years work experience.

• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required.

• Valid Electrician’s license at time of appointment and must be maintained during the tenure of employment is required.

• Knowledge of the tools, equipment and testing devices used to maintain and repair electrical systems required.

• Skilled in the care and use of tools, equipment and testing devices used to maintain and repair electrical systems required.

• Ability to performing physical activities such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, and stooping required.

• Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions involved in the trade required.

• Ability to maintain sensitivity, understanding and respect for a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological, and ethnic backgrounds required.
