Position Description

Positions in this banded class are responsible for the cultivation, maintenance and promotion of plants, turf or a plant collection in an assigned program or geographical area of the university. Positions in this class observe and diagnose structural and horticultural problems.

Work includes installation of all new plant material following plans and/or approved horticultural/grounds practices and procedures; maintaining the beds including pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilizing and spraying of plant material, which may include pesticides. This position is assigned a wide range of horticultural and landscape management duties to include assisting in cultural activities, spraying pesticides, equipment operation responsibilities, lawn and landscape renovations, landscape installations and repair of irrigation systems.

Participates in landscape design and construction, supply and arrange special foliage for events, seasonal color coordinator, or promote knowledge and understanding of the plants. Work requires the use of special tools for cultivation, maintenance and transportation of plants.

This position serves as part of the snow and ice management team during the winter months.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. NOTE: Some positions may require special licenses or certification.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Applicant must possess landscape maintenance experience or an equivalent combination of related technical training and experience, and must have the ability to efficiently and safely operate road equipment; operate and maintain landscape equipment; effectively plant trees, plants, shrubs, etc.; closely monitor watering needs of plants during the warm season; effectively and safely apply herbicide, pesticides, and fungicides; and effectively communicate.

Requires experience in applying winter weather practices; and applicants must be able to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of mandatory university operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions occur, including but not limited to: a public health emergency, or situation that may require the University to close.

Preferred Qualifications

Two years of landscape maintenance experience or an equivalent combination of related technical training and experience.

Required Licenses/Certifications

Valid N.C. Driver’s License.

Special Physical and Mental Requirements

This is a physically demanding position. This person must be able to bend, stoop, lift, work from a ladder or an airlift, and operate equipment on varied terrain for extended periods of time. Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds. Must use PPE and wear steel toe shoes.

    Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina.     Carolina Computing Initiative: Beginning with the freshman class of 2000, undergraduates must purchase laptop computers.
