Department Description

The Department of Epidemiology is one of the seven departments located in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. The department’s primary focus is to the development and application of research methods to understand the patterns and causes of health and disease, and the application of that knowledge to improving the health of populations. We provide strong training in research methods and opportunities for the application of epidemiology to a wide range of health problems through our research. The achievements of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni have enabled us to become one of the leading academic departments of epidemiology in the world. The department has 31 Tenured-Tenure Track / 7 Joint Tenure-Track Faculty, 28 Fixed Term / 3 Joint Fixed Term Faculty, 123 Adjuncts, 21 EHRA Non-Faculty, 10 Postdocs, 40 SHRA (Staff), 31 SHRA Temporary and 204 Students (150 PhD, 24 MSPH/PhD, 10, MPH, and 20 MSCR). The department was responsible for the administration of grants in excess of $23.8 million for the last fiscal year. EPID faculty hold grants and contracts valued at over $74.6 million, not necessarily predominantly from NIH since the largest (MEASURE) is funded by USAID.

Position Description

The primary purpose of this position is to aid the principal investigator of a large laboratory and senior scientific staff with isolating and characterizing chimeric dengue viruses from reverse genetics platforms, characterizing dengue virus escapes mutants and using immunological assays to characterize the immune response following dengue virus vaccination strategies. The ultimate goal of the project will be identifying a successful vaccination strategy against human dengue viruses.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

This position requires unsupervised organizational and experimental skills including knowledge of neutralization assay development, isolation of viral antibody escape mutants, flavivirology, mammalian cell culture and basic molecular biology. This position will require the generation of data and keeping detailed descriptions of protocols in a lab notebook.

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer candidate with experience in culturing and maintaining eukaryotic tissue culture cells; handling/working with human and non-human primate samples; working with mouse models (all necessary training provided); performing ELISA assays, antibody isotyping/allotyping, and flow cytometry; working with biosafety level 2 pathogens (infectious human dengue virus/flavivirus will be the primary pathogen of focus. Training will be provided as required by UNC approved standard operating procedures); as well as a candidate with excellent molecular biology skills (i.e. experience with E. coli culture and DNA extraction, restriction digestions, PCR, DNA fragment purification, ligations, and eukaryotic cell transfections, DNA and RNA quantitations, real time PCR analysis, mutagenesis using Golden Gate cloning, isolation of RNA) and laboratory techniques (including focus reduction neutralization assay and viral titration assays).

    Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina.
