The External Relations Manager (ERM) will work to obtain positive news media coverage of Governors State University with the objective of enhancing the university’s academic and overall image and value proposition, increasing prospective students, deepening alumni engagement, and building community. The ERM is responsible for cultivating relationships with local, regional, and national media, identifying opportunities to raise visibility of the university in various media, and supporting the efforts of journalists covering university-related stories. The ERM will serve as the Primary Emergency Response Team Public Information Officer. The ERM will actively engage in marketing strategies, university brand building, and community engagement.

Essential Responsibilities

30%-Achieve news media coverage through the development of effective and creative media pitch strategies and by identifying trending news topics in which GSU faculty and other campus experts can be pitched for inclusion in stories. Disseminate coverage to appropriate GSU media platforms. Develop regularly updated list of key news media personnel who cover issues important to Governors State University and maintain a detailed database of these key contacts. Build connections with key media and form deep understanding of the topics they are interested in, their deadlines, and contact preferences. Monitor news coverage of other Illinois universities and implement strategies to ensure that GSU is well-represented, regularly included, and highlighted in coverage.

15%-Meet regularly with editorial and marketing team to help identify and/or communicate community issues, feedback, needs, events, and activities. Work with the marketing team to enhance brand value proposition, talking points, and academic program marketing.

15%-Represent GSU in various community events, organizational meetings, and municipal activities.

15%-Execute advertising buys and strategies in all media platforms.

10%-Participate on the Emergency Response Team, as the Public Information Officer.

5%-Proactively seek out, research, and develop strong story/content ideas about Governors State University, by developing strong campus contacts and writing news releases/stories, as necessary to support media outreach efforts and to provide content for social media and the GSU Newsroom. Where relevant, incorporate multimedia features in stories, including photos, short videos, and infographics.

5%-Develop and manage the online faculty expert-guide and host faculty, staff, and student media training.

5%-Prepare monthly media coverage reports to show results of outreach initiatives and outcomes.

The minimum starting monthly rate is $2,916.88.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, radio/television broadcasting, web/digital media, English, marketing, public relations or sales.

2. One (1) year (12 months) of professional work experience in public relations, journalism, social media communications, newspaper reporting, radio/television broadcasting with emphasis on production, or web/digital media.

3. Based on position requirements, additional education, training and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position, may be required.

  • Note: Master’s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year (12 months) of work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, radio/television broadcasting, web/digital media, English, marketing, public relations, sales, and related experience.

• Master’s degree a plus.

• Minimum of (3) three years of demonstrated media relations or constituent relationship equivalent experience, preferably in an education, agency, nonprofit or corporate communications environment where proactive and positive media placements were the primary job responsibility.

• Demonstrated success, with examples, in pitching stories to media outlets.

• Strong copywriting and copyediting skills. Ability to write and organize pieces well, quickly, accurately, strategically, and under pressure.
