DESCRIPTIONThe Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments within the School of Medicine with approximately 171 Faculty, 50 post-doctoral fellows (both MDs and PhDs) along with over 300 support staff (not including hospital staff). In addition, the Department has 57 clinical residents and fellows distributed across the Divisions. The missions of research, education and patient care are intertwined, and are integral to the goals of the department.
Working in close cooperation with PI, postdoctoral fellows, and lab manager, the position will independently perform molecular biology and culturing work, as well as coordinate and manage bioinformatics projects with students and postdocs.
The position contributes to certain laboratory management duties that include overseeing ordering, inventory, and equipment upkeep, in conjunction with the lab manager. Optimization of existing protocols and development of new protocols will occasionally be required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSTheoretical knowledge of biochemistry and/or microbiology or related field as typically attained by a Bachelor's Degree; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
A minimum of two (2+) or more years of experience working in a microbiology lab.
Demonstrated experience in the preparation of scientific reagents.
Proven knowledge and experience with laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, bioguard hood, microscope, pipeters, autoclave, balances and incubators.
General knowledge of laboratory skills and safety training.
Demonstrated knowledge of sterile technique for bacterial and cell culture.
Proven knowledge of principles underlying DNA, RNA, and protein analysis, PCR, and ELISA.
Demonstrated ability to assist in preparation of detailed and accurate scientific reports.
Solid knowledge of laboratory safety including radioactive/biohazard handling and disposal techniques, and the ability to ensure laboratory compliance with required safety regulations.
- Experience with mouse handling and experimentation.
- Experience with tissue culture.
- Bachelor's Degree in biochemistry and/or microbiology or related field.
- Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
- Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
- Must be willing to work with biohazardous material including bacterial and tissue samples.
