Position Summary:
Southern Illinois University Carbondale invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of Gift Planning. The Director provides overall direction for SIU’s Office of Gift Planning and provides leadership and expertise in the areas of gift planning, deferred giving and charitable estate planning, as well as maintaining a personal portfolio of deferred and major gift prospects. This position is responsible for cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors and prospective donors to SIU Carbondale. The successful candidate will be a member of the University Development Staff and will report to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Development and Alumni Relations. Extensive travel and evening and weekend duties as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides overall direction for SIU’s Office of Gift Planning and provide leadership and expertise in the areas of gift planning, deferred giving and charitable estate planning. Identifies cultivates, solicits and stewards donors and prospective donors to SIU whether through major outright or planned gift contributions. Solicits high-end, often complex gifts. Develops and implements effective multi-channel marketing strategies that identify prospective donors to SIU Carbondale. Serves as a subject matter expert in the field of gift planning and provides training and consultation to fundraising staff, university leaders and volunteers. Assists other Development and Alumni Relations staff members in initiating, developing and maintaining relationships that are judged to be beneficial to SIU Carbondale. Extensive travel, including nights and weekends, required. This position requires the ability to use good judgment, diplomacy, maintain confidentiality and represent the university with tact and diplomacy at all times.

Minimum Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree is required, as well as a minimum of five years' successful professional experience in fundraising or related non-profit organization work, alumni relations, PR/Marketing, work in the financial services industry, or closely-related field. Knowledge of planned giving vehicles and tax consequences associated with such gifts is required. Must have a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:
A Master’s degree, and/or CFRE or CFP® current certification. Professional experience as a fundraiser in higher education, health-care or other non-profit organization.
