Nature of Work:

The Genetic Counselor will provide clinical assessment and genetic counseling in the Developmental Pediatrics Clinic at Children's Hospital Colorado. Developmental Pediatrics is a regional program that provides clinical evaluations and management of a broad range of developmental and behavioral disorders. We also are involved in clinical research and clinical trials. The Genetic Counselor would work as part of an interdisciplinary team including Developmental Behavioral pediatricians, advanced practice providers, psychologists, social worker, family navigator, nurses, and medical assistants. The Genetic Counselor also will collaborate with primary care clinicians in rural and underserved areas around the state of Colorado. The Genetic Counselor would model professionalism through conduct, appearance, communication, mutual respect, leadership, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.


Examples of Work Performed:

  • Consulting with clinicians regarding appropriate genetic testing
  • Obtaining informed consent for genetic testing during clinic visits
  • Coordinating genetic testing, supervising staff who perform pre-authorization, and communication of results to families
  • Conducting in-person genetic counseling sessions regarding positive test results
  • Obtaining pedigrees for families with identified or possibly inherited conditions
  • Assisting with additional referrals based on clinical findings and genetic results
  • Assisting patients in obtaining appropriate medical management from their health care providers
  • Connecting families with local and national resources relevant to genetic test results
  • Consult with genetics department and a genetics specialist for newly diagnosed patients requiring further follow-up in genetics clinic
  • Attend a variety of departmental and team meetings
  • Supervise trainees, post-docs and graduate students participating in clinic
  • Enhance the efficiency of the Developmental Pediatrics Clinic by providing genetic expertise and guidance in testing for community and referring providers
  • Participate in and/or lead Quality Improvement initiatives related to Genetic evaluations
  • Help to develop a Telehealth program in rural and underserved areas of Colorado.
  • Perform other duties as required and/or requested based on the needs of the patient, clinic and department
  • Scholarly activities welcomed but not required.

    Salaryand Benefits:

    The salary for this position is commensurate withskills and experience. Thisposition is not eligible for overtime compensation.

    Qualifications

    MinimumQualifications:

  • Graduate with a Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling.
  • Board Eligible or Certified in Genetic Counseling
  • PreferredQualifications:

    Preferredexperience in pediatric genetic counseling specialty
