OVERVIEW

 

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is the primary department charged with creating a safe and secure environment at Princeton University. DPS operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and is comprised of 108 staff members.   The department consists of professional University police, security officers, dispatchers and administrators dedicated to providing best-in-class service to the community. DPS was awarded Law Enforcement Accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) in July 2015. CALEA serves as the “International Gold Standard for Public Safety Agencies” and oversees a rigorous accreditation process. Non-sworn security officers work in several different areas including  the main campus, at the James Forrestal campus, in Firestone Library, in the Princeton University Art Museum and their off-site storage facility.

DPS is seeking intuitive, reliable, attentive, detail-oriented individuals with strong communication and customer service skills to serve as full-time Security Officers assigned to the Princeton University Art Museum. Concurrent with ensuring a safe environment, this position provides excellent internal and external customer service. The Museum Security Officer helps to provide a safe and secure environment for Museum employees and visitors while safeguarding the fine art and equipment by protecting the Museum from all types of threats such as theft, fire or any other type of danger. In addition to protecting the art by walking through the galleries, an Art Museum Security Officer engages with visitors by answering their questions, reuniting lost children with their caregivers, and making sure that visitors follow the appropriate Museum policies.

The nature of the work requires some sustained physical effort involving considerable standing and walking for extended periods of time. Incumbents may be required to work any shift, rotating shifts, weekends, holidays and overtime may be assigned as necessary. Incumbents may also be assigned to work at the off-site storage facility located on the Forrestal campus and elsewhere as needed on the Princeton University campus.

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Knowledge of: general techniques and practices for public safety, preventing loss or damage to museum exhibits and facilities; general practices relating to security operations; first aid; CPR; emergency response; access control; surveillance systems; fire systems monitoring; use of fire extinguishers; electronic alarm systems; communication equipment and emergency evacuation plans.
  • Ability to : enforce rules and regulations governing conduct of the public; deal tactfully and appropriately with the general public and staff; effectively convey information and instructions to museum personnel and the general public in person or over the radio, including during emergencies; and use various software programs and operate computerized security surveillance and fire detection systems.
  • As part of an assigned team, the security officer provide general security, personal safety and customer services to the University community as well as specialized security preserving and protecting University property from theft and vandalism.
  • Officers patrol various cultural properties, conduct security inspections, building lockups and act as the primary point of contact for staff and visitors entering the Museum.
  • Understand access control, camera, fire and life safety systems and know locations of emergency exits in event of an emergency.
  • Officers staff the control rooms at the Art Museum and the off-site storage facility. They actively monitor security access, CCTV, fire and environmental systems.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with all members of the campus community including students, faculty, staff, alumni, docents, and visitors.
  • Officers inspect and ensure security and safety and report all deficiencies to their supervisor.
  • Officers are knowledgeable of pedestrian traffic flow, recognize unusual incidents or unwarranted intrusions, and effect prompt and proper requests for assistance when required.
  • Officers maintain constant standing and active walking patrol to support University guests with information and assistance.
  • Officers utilize communication means available for reporting purposes, emergency requests and normal business.
  • Officers respond to incidents, accidents, and other emergency situations and are responsible for administering CPR and First Aid.
  • Officers are aware of and understand all special and general orders pertaining to the job.
  • Look for ways to make continuous improvements to processes and procedures
  • Provide a safe and friendly environment for the residents and visitors of Princeton University
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFCATIONS

  • Candidate must be customer service orientated and possess excellent customer service skills.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work on all shifts (standard work week is 40 hours, standard shifts are 8, 10 or 12 hours), during various hours, including weekends and holidays. Overtime is mandatory.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Prior experience using security and life safety systems including intrusion alarm, surveillance/CCTV, visitor management, key control and access systems.
  • Must be highly motivated and demonstrate the ability to excel in a fast paced environment.
  • Must be efficient with different types of computer software in word processing, spreadsheets, and personal information management.
  • Successfully complete various fitness for duty assessments including:
    • Written exams
    • Post offer pre-employment medical exam (POPES) for hire, transfers, promotions and/or layoff placements
    • Background check
  • Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary or medium heavy work; must be able to remain on feet for a minimum of eight hours at a time with scheduled breaks.
  • Position requires moderate physical activity.
  • Must conduct oneself in a professional and efficient manner during interaction with people.
  • Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, carry, push, pull, climb, balance, walk, and run.
  • Must be able to exert up to thirty pounds of force frequently or constantly lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Must operate a variety of machines and equipment including, but not limited to automobile, office equipment, radio, telephone, etc.
  • Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperature and loud noises.
  • Work involves moderate exposure to hazards and physical risks to personal safety.
  • Must have 20-20 or 20-30 vision either naturally or with corrective lenses.
  • This is a unionized position: International Union, Security, Police and Fire Professional of America (SPFPA).
  • Per the SPFPA contact the starting salary is $34,000/year.
  • Per the SPFPA contract this position has a 12 month probationary period.
  • The final candidate must successfully complete a background check. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior Art Museum or hospitality experience is a plus.
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree.
  • CIPS, CISS, CIPM and/or CPP preferred.
