DepartmentUnder the general supervision of the Manager of Recreation & Wellness, the incumbent provides front line leadership to ensure a safe and secure environment for all pool users and staff. Supervisory responsibilities include assisting with overseeing the work of the lifeguards; assisting with training new staff; ensuring timely and appropriate set up and take-down of equipment for scheduled aquatics activities; and providing feedback on staff and swimming instructor performance. Technical responsibilities include swimming pool operations such as water chemistry, maintenance and filtration systems at the Hart House pool, as well as basic operations of other technical equipment related to aquatics programming. Administrative duties include support with payroll preparation; participant statistics administration; program and service equipment inventories; and daily chemical logs.
The incumbent provides support with customer service inquiries and provides detailed explanations; opening and closing procedures that ensure pool security; data confidentiality and security; and ensuring that all staff and patrons are adhering to the provincial regulations for swimming pools and university/Hart House policies. The Aquatics Supervisor is responsible for response and leadership in emergency situations that take place within the pool enclosures, the change rooms and also within the Fitness Centre facility during special events. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining excellent communication with students and members; occasional rental clients; staff; and managers—including conveying information for the preventive maintenance of the facility and any potential problems. Campus(MINIMUM)
Education:

Bachelor’s degree or completion of a college program/diploma in Recreation or equivalent in education and experience. 
Experience:
Minimum two (2) years lifeguarding experience. Experience in aquatic instruction and programming in a university setting required. Supervisory experience required. Knowledge of and experience with University Toronto and Hart House programs a notable asset.

Skills:
Strong interpersonal skills and solid oral and written communication in English; strong leadership skills; basic computer skills (Word, Excel, CLASS and Access); understanding of high performance sport, and aquatics in particular; understanding of and demonstrated strong commitment to excellent customer service; able to perform under stressful conditions (an emergency) and ability to multitask; thorough understanding of Ontario Health Regulations for Swimming Pools and accident prevention; tactful enforcement of health regulations and policy.

Other:
Excellent punctuality; proven ability to work effectively within a team and independently; ability to exercise discretion and good judgment; ability to deal with difficult people and handle conflict situations with excellent listening, de-escalation, and resolution skills; understanding of and demonstrated commitment to equity and diversity issues in keeping with Hart House’s mission, goals and values; must provide proof that there are no relevant police records that would impact working in a position of leadership with children and vulnerable clients as set out by the Lifesaving Society.

A current and valid National Lifeguard Service certification (pool option) issued by the Lifesaving Society, a current CPR-C certificate within one year of issue (SJA, RC, Canadian Ski Patrol or LSS), a Standard First Aid certificate (SJA, RC, Canadian Ski Patrol or LSS) within two years of issue, and a current LSS Automated External Defibrillator certificate.

An LSS Airway Management certificate and Anaphylaxis Rescuer certificate prior to employment is an asset but will be offered and must be obtained immediately upon hiring. Aquatic instruction and examiner certificates are required. A Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and Lifesaving Society Swimming Instructor certification and /or relevant CPR instructor, First Aid instructor, NLS Instructor, AED Instructor or Airway Management Instructor certifications are required. Certification as a Pool Operator (LSS or ORFA) is required.

Must attend wet screening (lifeguarding, first aid, CPR and AED skills) to demonstrate that skills exceed the minimum standards of the Lifesaving Society and other certifying organizations.

WHIMIS certified.
