Scope of Job:
To provide management and supervision of a journeyman level crew or area within a zone in the maintenance, repair, and service of campus facilities. Responsible for planning, scheduling and implementing assigned tasks for the effective maintenance of facilities. Directly responsible for assigning and performing advanced journeyman level tasks in the maintenance, remodeling and/or repair of campus buildings.

Description of Duties:
• Plans, schedules, coordinates, assigns, and/or supervises the work of maintenance crews in a variety of maintenance tasks to include mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing and general maintenance trades.
• Performs advanced journeyman level tasks in the maintenance, remodeling and/or repair of campus buildings.
• Develops and administers preventive maintenance programs for the assigned area.
• Communicates with customers, employees, and university administration personnel in reference to projects, estimates and related services. Supervises and participates in the all needed tasks.
• Maintains accurate records of work performed, materials used and related costs.
• Operates a variety of tools and equipment, such as hand-held and power tools, hydraulic lifts, and forklifts.
• Ensures the maintenance, safety and security of the equipment and building facilities.
• Supervises and participates in all needed tasks.
• Orders parts and supplies for maintenance and repair of equipment.
• Obtains bids and/or quotes for the requisition of maintenance materials and processes requests for approval. Orders material when approved and needed.
• Plans and coordinates work orders to include problem investigation
• Determines personnel, equipment, and schedules for specific job requirements.
• Recommends and/or provides trainings for maintenance personnel and evaluates assigned staff.
• Conducts quality control through inspection of projects.
• May require irregular working hours / split shift and “on call” basis.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received:
General supervision from the assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given:
Specific supervision of assigned staff.

Required Education:
High school diploma or equivalent. Approved apprenticeship training or certification in course work related to a skilled trade.

Preferred Education:
None.

Licenses/Certifications:
Valid Texas State driver’s license or ability to obtain within six (6) weeks of hire. Journeyman license or certification in course work related to a skilled trade in Building Maintenance.

Required Experience:
Six (6) years of skilled/journeyman level experience in building and utilities maintenance, including three (3) years supervisory experience.

Preferred Experience:
None.

Equipment:
Operates a variety of tools and equipment including hand-held and power tools, hydraulic lifts, and forklifts. Use of standard office equipment for daily entry of timecard data, work order information and other general report information.

Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Construction/field environment; traveling from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, dirt, electrical hazards, high voltage and toxic materials; working at heights on scaffolding and ladders; working in confined spaces. May require some shift work, night and weekends. Some exposure to outside weather conditions. Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing, bending, kneeling stooping, crawling, or climbing for extended periods of time; lifting and carrying moderate to heavy materials; operating motorized equipment and vehicles. This position will be subject to a pre-employment physical.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

 

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

 

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
