Description:

  • This position will be responsible for leading day-to-day laboratory operations and coordinating field operations/logistics with other staff members. The mission of the Center for Sportfish Science and Conservation at the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies is to advance knowledge of marine sportfish and to promote conservation through science-based fisheries management. This person will work with the Center's team of fisheries staff and students to gain a better understanding of fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico.

Responsibilities:
  • 30% Responsible for daily laboratory operations, including, but not limited to, supply inventory, training and managing hourly personnel (including student workers), sample organization, sample QA/QC, and data entry and processing.
  • 25 % Conducts laboratory sample processing, including larval/juvenile fish identification and enumeration, and adult fish life history processing (otolith processing, stomach content analysis, GSI, etc).
  • 35% Coordinates with staff to plan and carry out daily field operations/logistics. This will include sample collection and could potentially involve leading small field crews. In addition, individual will be responsible for organization, cleaning, maintaining, and ensuring all field equipment is in proper working order including instrumentation, sampling gear, vehicles and small boats, and other field preparation and sampling needs as assigned. Regularly participates in both inshore and offshore field work.
  • 10 % Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Technician I
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Marine Biology, Ecology, Fisheries, Environmental Science, Marine Science or related field.
Technician II
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Marine Biology, Ecology, Fisheries, Environmental Science, Marine Science or related field.
  • Two (2) years of related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience.
Technician III
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Marine Biology, Ecology, Fisheries, Environmental Science, Marine Science or related field.
  • Three (3) years of related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience.

Other Skills:
  • High level of personal motivation, organization, and self-management.
  • Candidate should be detail-oriented with the ability to take responsibility in meeting deadlines without direct supervision.
  • Ability to work in demanding conditions onboard inshore and offshore fishing vessels under a variety of weather conditions.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work on an interdisciplinary research team.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Existing database skills using Microsoft Access and Excel.
  • Previous experience conducting laboratory sample processing, including larval/juvenile fish identification and enumeration, and adult fish life history processing (otolith microchemistry, stomach content analysis, GSI, etc).
  • Previous experience conducting fisheries field work on research vessels under a variety of weather conditions in offshore waters, and experience with small boat operations.
  • Existing Scientific Diver or Open Water certification.
