Organizational Description

The Career Development Center (CDC) is a department under the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management (DOSAEM). The department is responsible for career counseling, employer relations, campus wide internship coordination, on campus employment, money management and the Fresno State Clothing Closet. The CDC assists students, both undergraduate and graduate, and alumni to discover their passions and make informed career and educational decisions through a variety of functions including career counseling, career development workshops and presentations, employer networking and mentoring events, job search readiness, employment fairs and on-campus interviews. It also assists employers in meeting their college relations and staffing needs. The CDC partners with all eight colleges and advising centers and various programs on campus to facilitate life long career development through self-awareness, experiential learning, career discovery and decision making and the job search process.

Overview

Under the general supervision of the Director, the career advisor works independently and in a collaborative team setting serving as a career liaison to 1-2 colleges out of the eight on campus. The advisor provides quality career services to students, alumni and faculty in individual as well as group settings. The liaison will work in collaboration with the employer relations team to connect students with employers/industry relevant to that college(s).

Position Summary

Career Advising/Development: Provides career advising individually and on a group facilitation basis for students choosing a major, preparing for or entering careers, seeking employment, identifying internship/career related opportunities with emphasis in targeted fields. Plans, develops and implements professional development, career development and employment-related programs targeted to students in partnership with academic sector and employers to ensure smooth entry into the workplace. Supports students with the development of employment transition plans including building quality job searches, resume/portfolio preparation, interviewing and networking competencies. Conducts workshops and facilitates groups on various career management, career readiness and job search topics. Assess needs and coordinates learning outcomes with faculty in collaboration with key employers, community partners and CDC team. Supports development of resources, online/virtual tools relevant to programmatic and career education needs.

Program Promotion and Implementation: Serves as career liaison to assigned college(s) and related employers, ensuring coordination of activities/services and development of strong partnerships.Develops relationships and communication with academic partners from assigned college(s) and related academic clubs and relevant professional/community organizations. Engages academic sector in serving the needs of employers and relevant programs. Encourage and assist faculty in developing careers into curriculum. Assists with program development and delivery of events/workshops/programs which prepare students for career readiness and quality connections with employers and successful employment experiences.

Misc/General Responsibilities: Participates in staff meetings and is actively engaged on committees and special programs related to career development of students. Supports University, Division and Center's mission and goals, contributes to a positive work climate and appreciation for diversity. Maintain ongoing professional development with relevant professional organizations.

Education and Experience
  • Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job related field
    • Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis
  • Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or related field such as teaching, student development, career coaching/advising; human resources; and economic or workforce development. Experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.
    • A master's degree in a job-related field may substitute for one year of the professional experience
