Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with some evening and weekend work as needed.

Reporting to the Rice Business Associate Dean for Innovation, the Associate Director for Instructional Design and Program Innovation partners with faculty and relevant stakeholders to develop new and engaging technology-enabled content, undertakes online course development and course maintenance. This individual has an accomplished background in curriculum design and development and a deep understanding of education technology trends, organizations, and opportunities. The Associate Director will work with the Associate Dean to build new capabilities across the enterprise and hire and manage the team that drives innovation across degree and non-degree courses and programming.

Education Required Bachelor's Degree Major/Discipline

Instructional design or a related field.

Substitution for Education Requirement

Experience may not be a substitute for the education requirement.

Education Preferred

Master’s degree in a related field is strongly preferred.

Experience Required 5 years Type of Experience

Related experience in instructional design of higher education course work.

Substitution for Experience Requirement

May substitute additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis in lieu of the experience requirement.

Experience Preferred

Experience in a business school environment.

License/Certification Required License/Certification Preferred Skills Required

- Ability to define and solve logical problems for technical applications
- Demonstrated ability to express course material and pedagogic goals through the
imaginative application of technology to existing materials and structures
- Ability to plan, design, develop and evaluate engaging multimedia learning / training objectives
- Excellent teaching, communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to interact effectively and tactfully with members of the academic community;
demonstrated experience working in an environment with colleagues of diverse
backgrounds and customs
- Demonstrated expertise with instructional design methodologies, pedagogical issues
and best practices for classroom, online and hybrid learning
- Excellent time management and project management skills
- Demonstrated ability to manage a complex workload, prioritize tasks and use good
judgment in providing services based on goal
- Expert knowledge of Macintosh and Windows environments
- Expert knowledge of learning management systems and various classroom and online
learning technologies
- Excellent customer service skills, strong interpersonal skills

Skills Preferred Internal / External Contacts

Internal: Will work closely with faculty and staff within the school and across campus.

External: Will work with vendors, partners, peers at other universities, and with constituents of the university.

Physical Demands

Able to work at a computer for extended periods, up to eight hours per day.

- Oversees or provides innovation and leadership relating to course offerings and technology-enhanced content
- Leads the development of resources, seminars, courses, or workshops to disseminate information about uses of technology
- Actively encourages and supports the use of computer-based tools by developing and implementing new tools and resources for instructors or students, assisting them with the tools, disseminating knowledge of these tools throughout the program or university, and creating and supporting an infrastructure that allows use of the tools in research, teaching and / or learning
- Assists with coordination of academic learning technology policies, procedures, and support
- Leads projects to develop innovative uses of technology for research, student learning and / or community building
- Consults on development of software applications, or work with on- or off-campus resources to develop or adapt software solutions
- Consults with and help instructors and / or departments to incorporate technologies into faculty research projects, course design and curricula and / or co-curricula in support of student learning goals
- Stays abreast of educational technology research and participate in academic conferences
- Provides expertise and support in applying instructional design methodologies to the development, implementation, and evaluation of face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses
- Provides outreach and advocacy within and across departments for effective uses of educational technology
- Develops, manages, and tracks team and business unit budget
- Develops and improves workflows and practices that support innovative instructional design
