Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)

Bachelor's Degree in Veterinary Science or related field. In lieu of the Bachelor’s degree, a combination of education and full time work experience totaling four (4) years (of which one year is in veterinary science) may be considered.  One (1) year full time experience in veterinary science, to include experience in laboratory animal medicine or clinical veterinary medicine.

 

Preferred Qualifications: 
Experience with common laboratory animal species. Licensed Veterinary Technician. AALAS certification.


Brief Description of Duties:Assist in the conduction of large animal receiving and animal conditioning and maintenance programs, including the associated recordkeeping.

Assisting with routine veterinary health care  – under the guidance of a veterinarian:

  • Veterinary medical rounds
  • Observe animals on a routine basis, as assigned.
  • Consult with clinical veterinarian and contact investigators for information on research use.
  • Provide treatments, as prescribed.
  • Collect diagnostic samples (blood, stool, urine). Send samples to diagnostic laboratory. Maintain all pertinent records.
Post-procedural Care:

  • Provide post-procedural observations, as assigned.
  • Complete all medical records.
  • Provide post-procedural treatments
  • Collect diagnostic samples from post-procedural animals. Send to the diagnostic laboratory. Maintain all pertinent records.
Assist with the ordering of drugs and supplies and maintaining all drug inventory and controlled substance paperwork:

  • Inventory all drugs and supplies and complete orders for signature.
  • Monitor all areas for outdated drugs and dispose of any that are outdated.
  • Maintain controlled drug inventory and records. Check out controlled drugs to investigators, per protocol.
  • Prepare for shipment, perform appropriate paperwork and return outdated controlled substances.
Diagnostic Laboratory – Assist veterinarian in performing diagnostic tests and record results, per SOP:

  • Hematology
  • Parasitology
  • Bacteriology
  • Serology
  • Maintenance of diagnostic laboratory including, inventory control, ordering supplies and keeping procedure log/records
  • Send out specimens, as directed, to diagnostic labs
Assist veterinarian in rodent sentinel sampling collection, processing for analysis and associated record keeping.

Assist veterinarian in large animal euthanasia and necropsy:

  • Euthanize animals, per protocol, as assigned.
  • Send out samples for histopathology, as directed.
Assist veterinarians and investigators in surgery:

  • Schedule procedures, after consultation with veterinarian.
  • Prep animals for surgery
  • Assist in surgery, as needed
  • Clean up after procedures
  • Maintain anesthesia and surgery records for each case
  • Provide post-operative monitoring and care, as directed.
  • Maintain surgical suites, prep room, pack room and storage areas
  • Maintain all anesthesia and surgery equipment.
  • Autoclave instruments and supplies
Assist veterinarian and investigators in radiology:

  • Perform and/or assist in all diagnostic procedures.
  • Process films.
  • Assist in special procedures by investigators.
  • Maintain log book of procedures.
  • Maintain cost accounting records and investigator recharge bill generation
  • Assist in scheduling and performing technical tasks for investigators, as requested.
  • Assist veterinarian in the training of DLAR and investigator staff members in animal related procedures.
Special Notes:

This is a per diem appointment.  FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.


Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed.  Positions that are designated as such are required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are cancelled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
