The employee(s) hired for this position will serve as part of a temporary pool of reserve Police Officers for UNC Asheville.

As a central part of the university community, the mission of University Police is to contribute to and promote the greater mission of UNC Asheville by facilitating a safe, secure and service-oriented environment for all students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors. They do this by offering crime prevention programs to promote safety, and deter criminal activity. University Police Officers’ conduct various law enforcement activities, including patrolling within the geographic jurisdiction, conducting criminal investigations, crime prevention, assisting motorists, parking/traffic control and providing security at special events.

High school diploma or equivalency. Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills

Current possession of North Carolina BLET Certification. The preferred candidate will have at least two years of campus law enforcement experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Possession of a designated level of technical skill or knowledge in a specific technical area(s) and the ability to keep up with current developments and trends in areas of expertise.

Ability to present information to individuals or groups; ability to deliver presentations suited to the characteristics and needs of the audience. Ability to convey information clearly and concisely to groups or individuals either verbally or in writing to ensure that they understand the information and the message. Ability to listens and respond appropriately to others.

Ability to understand the organization’s mission, the function of the specific work unit and how it works with other work units to serve the customer/client. Ability to understand the impact and implications of decisions on the community and other departments

Ability to Identify problems, determine possible solutions, and actively work to resolve the issues.

Ability to identify issues, obtain relevant information, relate and compare data from different sources, and identify alternative

Work Schedule and Hours

This is a Temporary, Part-time, Reserve Officer position. Up to 40 hours per week based on departmental needs.

Position requires certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year. Valid driver’s license required at the time of application. Valid North Carolina driver’s license required prior to appointment.

Selected candidate must undergo an extensive background investigation including, but not limited to, psychological evaluation, medical exam, and drug screen. Skill demonstrations may be asked of all applicants interviewed.

As departmental temporary needs are identified, this pool will be reviewed periodically to obtain potential candidates. If selected, candidates will be contacted directly by the hiring officials to arrange an interview. All positions are temporary and will vary in length of time.
