Department Overview
The University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) is located in the cultural district of Fort Worth, Texas. UNTHSC is nationally recognized for its medical school, graduate student education, health professions, pharmacy, and public health programs. The Department of Pharmacology and Neuroscience is internationally recognized and committed to: biomedical research, education of future health care providers, graduate training, and community outreach. The P&N department is faculty home to three research institutes that support and organize focused cutting-edge basic and translational multidisciplinary research efforts in neurodegenerative disease (Institute for Healthy Aging and Institute for Translational Research) and visual sciences (North Texas Eye Research Institute).
The Department of Pharmacology and Neuroscience currently consists of 36 faculty, 19 graduate students, 11 postdoctoral fellows, and research staff who are actively conducting research in (1) drug discovery, development and behavioral pharmacology; (2) the neurobiology of aging, neurodegenerative disease, injury and stroke; and (3) diseases of the eye. The department maintains facilities for mass spectrometry, advanced confocal microscopy, high throughput electrophysiology and in vivo preclinical neurocognitive psychomotor and sensorineural testing. The P&N mission is to create solutions for enduring health and quality of life by integrating clinical care with cutting-edge research, and providing innovative education and community engagement
Position Details
The Pharmacology and Neuroscience Department at the University of North Texas Health Science Center is seeking to hire an Assistant Professor to join our team.
Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
* Teaching and mentoring of students.
* Establishing intramural and extramural research programs.
* Participating in the activities of departmental committees.
* Providing general support and guidance to students.
* Continuing their professional development.
* Maintaining a safe work environment, including ensuring compliance with legislation and the undertaking of risk assessments.
* Pursuing, developing and leading research, innovation and impact at an appropriately professional level in the fields of in HIV, neuroinflammation, and astrocyte biology.
* Developing a strategic direction with research focus in HIV, neuroinflammation, and astrocyte biology.
* Collaborating within and outside the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences
* Maintaining a high-quality record of research publications in HIV, neuroinflammation and astrocyte biology.
* Seeking extramural support in an individual and/or collaborative manner to support high quality research.
* Supervising students and technical staff undertaking research projects.
* Participating in UNTHSC as well as local, national and international service activities.
* Promoting the mission, vision and values of UNTHSC.
* Upholding high professional standards and leading by example.
* Pursuing activities assigned by the department chair.

Required Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess the following required qualifications:
* Ph.D. degree and a minimum of 2 years postdoctoral experience.
* Research experience evidenced by publications in HIV, neuroinflammation, and astrocyte biology.
* Active research program in HIV.
* At least 3-4 years of experience managing an external grant-supported lab from a federal agency such as NIH.
* Mentoring experience for undergraduate and/or graduate students.
Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:
* Extramural research funding from the NIH or other nationally recognized agency.
* Lecture experience at the graduate level.
* Experience in mentoring of post-doctoral fellows.
* Management experience overseeing a research lab staff.
* Experience in human research study management.
