Job Description:

Historical Overview

Mills College is home to the Mills College Upward Bound Program (MCUB) and will serve approximately 100 students from Oakland and West Contra Costa County this summer. TRIO Programs are educational opportunity outreach programs designed to motivate and educationally support students from low-income and first generation college going backgrounds. The MCUB program provides academic, social/cultural awareness, college prep, career exploration, and financial literacy services to its participants. Our goal is to support students through high school graduation and help them gain access to a postsecondary education. The Summer Academic Program will provide academic instruction in core subjects: English, Lab Sciences, and Mathematics. The MCUB Summer Academic Program will also provide workshops exploring various topics including: Life Skills, Study Skills and Time Management, Utilizing College Support Services, Career Exploration, and Cultural Awareness.

Summer Academic Program Description

The MCUB Program offers a six-week summer academic program for students entering grades 9th through 12th. The MCUB summer academic program will be conducted at Holy Names University in Oakland, CA. Staff orientation and one-week training will take place before the program begins; Training dates are to be announced prior to hiring. Instruction for the MCUB Summer Academic Program is scheduled to begin Monday, June 17, 2019 and continue through Friday, July 26, 2019. The tentative daily instructional schedule is 8:30 am - 4:00 pm Monday -Wednesday, and 8:30 am - 5:00 pm on Thursday. The student/parent orientation, weekly staff meetings (Thursdays), tutorial sessions and enrichment activities are mandatory events for all summer staff. The event dates are to be announced prior to hiring. MCUB Program is currently seeking highly motivated, knowledgeable, creative, engaging, student focused, experienced Tutor/TAs to tutor academic courses in : English, Lab Sciences, World Language, Social Sciences, and Mathematics.

Courses will be taught to high school students in 9th -12th grades.

The positions require someone who has passion, innovation, and knowledge to motivate and challenge students to generate skills necessary for college success. We seek Tutor/TAs who can develop strong mentorship that addresses students needs, interests, abilities, and curiosities in their preferred subject/s.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Be punctual, positive, motivated, interactive, flexible.
  • Be able to maintain a positive mental attitude throughout the program and present a positive image of Mills College Upward Bound to participants and guests.
  • Provide tutorial and academic assistance to Upward Bound Program students at Holy Names University campus.
  • Provide assistance to Instructors at Holy Names University.
  • Develop appropriate relationship with students. Work with students to complete assignments, prepare for tests and improve academic skills.
  • Assess students academic strengths and weaknesses, and help students set goals for improvement.
  • Monitor student grades and progress.
  • Assist in the set-up and breakdown of tutoring classrooms.
  • Support a program-wide culture of high expectations that includes college preparation and readiness for all students.
  • Participate in Upward Bound Program Tutor staff meetings.
  • Maintain accurate records (daily tutoring logs, student attendance, students needs or difficulties).
  • Develop and maintain consistent communication with Academic Coordinator regarding progress of students tutored.
  • Ability to understand, abides by, and enforces all Upward Bound Program policies.
  • Perform other related duties as needed.

    Requirements:

    Education & Experience

  • Strong knowledge of Biology, Chemistry, English, Algebra 1 and Algebra 2, Geometry, Pre - Calculus, Spanish, or Social Sciences.
  • Experience mentoring, tutoring and/or teaching low-income, first-generation college-bound students.
  • Have completed sophomore year in college or university.
  • Be in good academic standing at college or university attending (3.0 and above).
  • Be able to exhibit strong customer service orientation for all levels of College constituencies and members of the public.
  • Be able to take appropriate steps to promote and sustain effective working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.
  • Be able to work safely in compliance with College Injury and Illness Prevention Plan.
  • Knowledge of child/adolescent cognitive development and different learning styles.
  • Be able to attend the academic staff training June 10th - June 14th
  • Enforce Upward Bound Program rules and regulations.
  • Must be able to effectively work with students with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Must be able to understand and enforce all MCUB Program policies.

    Additional Information:

    Compensation: A stipend up to a maximum of $3,000.00 is awarded to the MCUB Program

    Summer Tutor/TA for the 7-week program based on the following criteria:

  • Amount of Funds budgeted in program grant for Summer Academic Instructors.
  • Educational Background
  • Experience teaching in Upward Bound or TRIO programs
  • General Tutoring Experience
  • Extra curricula responsibilities on Fridays (workshops, field trips, presentations, etc.)

    Staff members also receive free admission to campus events, use of the pool, fitness center, and tennis courts. Tuition remission is also available after an introductory period.
