Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The department has nearly 700 undergraduate majors and 45 graduate majors. The program offers bundled electives in law enforcement, corrections, juvenile justice and homeland security at the undergraduate level. The undergraduate program is the only program in North Carolina to be certified by both the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. The department is home to two Institutes: the Institute for Homeland Security and Workforce Development and the Juvenile Justice Institute

Primary Purpose of Position

The Division of Extended Studies/Department of Criminal Justice is seeking applications to fill one 9-month Clinical Instructor (non-tenure-track) position (617175) on a fixed-term contract beginning Spring 2019.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

In addition to academic advising, this person would also provide instruction and perform service activities consistent with the needs of the department, the Division of Extended Studies, and the University. The selected candidate will be expected to teach distance education courses and face-to-face instruction (a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester), travel to distance education instructional sites, and advise students face-to-face and in a virtual workspace. In addition, the candidate will participate in the normal functions of the department. Even though this is a Distance Education funded position, the faculty member reports to the Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice. The required knowledge, skills and abilities include advanced technological skills, effective written and interpersonal communication skills, knowledge and ability to deliver instruction via the Blackboard Learning Management System or similar systems, and experience with technology-integrated learning environments. Earned Master’s degree in criminal justice, criminology, or related field.

Minimum Education/Experience

Requirements for this position are:
Earned Master’s degree in criminal justice, criminology, or related field; Experience with teaching online and face-to-face courses, and experience teaching adult learners; Commitment to advising and working with diverse populations; Strong case Management Experience; and, Professional recommendations evidencing cooperation with colleagues, good character, integrity and attitude.

Preference will be given to persons who have experience with academic advising and student case management. This position requires travel to distance education sites (e.g. Wake Technical Community College and Vance Granville Community College). Teaching experience, professional experience, record of publication, and record of scholarly activities will be considered.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in developing and delivering online instruction via Blackboard or other similar Learning Management System and who have experience with technology integrated learning environments.
