Position SummaryReporting to and in collaboration with the Director, the Program Director will shape and focus the future direction of the Center for Black Visual Culture (CBVC) in terms of partnerships and new projects within the Institute for African American Affairs (IAAA) and more broadly. The Program Director serves as a principle spokesperson (along with the Director) to the internal and external constituencies of CBVC and will further develop the Center’s position nationally and internationally and in relation to black visual culture, the archive focusing on the arts and university programs. Center for Black Visual Culture is a space for scholarly and artistic inquiry into the understanding and exploration of images focusing on black people globally. It is both an incubator for new ideas and a center for the study of images (framing and reframing). As an interdisciplinary space for students, faculty, post-doc fellows, and the public, CBVC is a place for conversations, exhibitions, and listening as well as a locus for the production of new scholarship and art projects. The incumbent's responsibilities include the coordination and review of resources highlight the mission of the CBVC including ways in which to promote available research materials focusing on black visual studies and to ensure that the CBVC’s projects are available to the NYU community. The Program Director will be the go-to person for everything involving an archival project’s organization and timeline. The Program Director will lead the Center administratively and together with the Associate Director of IAAA will work in close collaboration to provide leadership and management of the CBVC and its staff. Please note this is a fixed-term position through August 31, 2020, subject to renewal.QualificationsRequired Education:Master's Degree Library and Information Studies or Master's Degree History or Art HistoryPreferred Education:Master's Degree Arts ManagementRequired Experience:10+ years of progressively responsible experience with programs in the field. Must include experience with libraries, archives, arts management, planning and implementing various domestic and international activities and events, and managing budgets and operations. Experience in development and fundraising, preferably in the greater New York community.Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:Program Director should have a background in archives and project management. Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to influence and work effectively, diplomatically, and collaboratively with key stakeholders (i.e., academic, artistic, and administrative faculty; staff; fellows; partners; and the broader community). Excellent written and oral communication skills. Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently. Strong people and organizational management skills. Ability to articulate a broad vision and serve as a thought leader for the future of black arts and culture; and university education. Demonstrated ability to commit to organizational mission, leadership ability in fostering organizational development, also an ability to operate in a shared leadership structure. Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed for the CBVC/IAAA’s public events and programs.
