SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Supervisor of Maintenance and Construction operates, maintains, repairs, installs and replaces machinery and mechanical equipment using diagrams, sketches, operation manuals or manufacturer’s specifications. Directs other mechanics and helpers.

  1. Install, adjust, repair, operate, maintain specialized and complex machinery such as pumps, compressors, air-moving equipment, motor heat exchanges, valves, regulator pneumatic system, wheeled equipment, O.R. tables, sterilizer, etc.
  2. Repairs or replaces defective parts using hand power tools and precision measuring and testing instruments. Fabricates new or replacement parts if required. Initiates orders for parts and machines.
  3. Read instruments and gauges on machines and equipment. Record temperatures, pressures and other measures in order to ensure safe and proper functioning of machines and equipment.
  4. Performs routine preventive maintenance on machinery and mechanical equipment.
  5. Analyzes situations requiring the modification or repair of equipment of facilities and makes recommendations.
  6. When assigned to shifts will respond to emergency calls and determines what corrective action must be taken to prevent further damage to equipment, the facility or to prevent personnel injury. Will make necessary emergency repairs to all malfunctioning refrigeration, plumbing, electrical and HVAC equipment.
  7. May assign, coordinate and inspect work performed by mechanics or helpers.
  8. Completes daily activity reports which include assignments and hours spent in completion.
  9. Complies with Rowan University's policies and Facilities Operations and Plant Management in order to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
  10. Requisitions, stores, safeguards and properly uses electrical equipment, materials and supplies.
  11. Interacts with persons of all ages in a diverse, multicultural environment with respect and consideration.
  12. Attends training sessions as required.
  13. Understands and adheres to Rowan SOM compliance standards as they appear in Rowan SOM Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
  14. Performs final check and clean up at the end of each shift.
  15. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  16. Performs other Facility related duties as required, which may include, but are not limited to, snow removal and/or other related facility duties.
  17. Performance must exhibit good customer service skills and teambuilding by cultivating and maintaining rapport with customers and co-workers.
  18. Presents a clean uniform appearance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and EXPEIENCE:

Technical school diploma or equivalent level of knowledge plus three (3) years progressively more responsible experience in machine operation and repairs in the following areas: refrigeration, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire alarm systems. Must have valid driver’s license. New Jersey Black Seal Engineer’s License preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Position requires the individual to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms and climb or balance up to 2/3 of the time; to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, to talk or hear and to taste or smell less than 1/3 of the time; to lift a weight or exert force from 10 to 25 pounds up to 2/3 of the time, from 50 pounds to over 100 pounds less than 1/3 of the time. Ability to perform physical labor without restrictions, including lifting equipment in excess of fifty (50) pounds, performing work on roofs, scaffolding and ladders. The position requires close, distance and color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception as well as the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The individual in this position may be exposed to environmental conditions such as wet or humid conditions (non-weather), work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat or cold (non-weather), risk of electrical shock, and vibration up to 2/3 of the time; to risk of radiation less than 1/3 of the time. Moderate noise is typical for the work environment of this job.

Working at Rowan University 

Rowan University, located a half-hour outside of Philadelphia with its main campus in suburban Glassboro, N.J., is an institution on the move.

This summer, the University opened Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) in partnership with Cooper University Health Care, in Camden. The first new four-year, M.D.-granting medical school in New Jersey in more than 35 years, CMSRU welcomed its first class in August 2012.

Rowan continues to work with the Borough of Glassboro and private developers on Rowan Boulevard, a $300 million redevelopment project that links the University’s main campus to the historic downtown. This fall alone, the partners broke ground for a new academic building/parking garage and a Marriott Courtyard Hotel. Rowan Boulevard already includes a Barnes & Noble Collegiate Superstore, housing for approximately 1,300 students and retail space.

The University also recently created a School of Biomedical Sciences, which joins nine colleges. In addition to CMSRU they are: the Rohrer College of Business, Communication & Creative Arts, Education, Engineering, Graduate & Continuing Education, Humanities & Social Sciences, Performing Arts, and Science & Mathematics.

Earlier in 2012, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie awarded Rowan state research institution status (not Carnegie classification) as part of the New Jersey Medical and Health Science Education Restructuring Act, making Rowan only the second comprehensive public research institution in the State. That Act also opened the door to Rowan partnering with Rutgers-Camden to create a College of Health Sciences in Camden near CMSRU. The vision for that College calls for schools of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, food science and 16 allied health programs. The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey’s School of Osteopathic Medicine in nearby Stratford, N.J., is to become part of Rowan in the near future. When that occurs, Rowan will be only the second school in the nation with M.D. and D.O. medical programs.
