Job Description

Occupational Summary

Perform routine food service tasks and manual work under immediatesupervision or detailed instructions in a food production and/or foodservice area; operate dish machine; wash, clean and mop food serviceareas as assigned.

Work Performed

Assist in the preparation of foods such as meats, vegetables, bakedgoods and desserts; prepare foods to include beverages, salads,dressings, sandwiches, and cold plates.Operate food production equipment to include slicers, choppers,dicers, mixers, vertical cutters, patty making machines, and othervegetable, bakery, and meat processing equipment.Transport food or supplies to serving areas; ensure that areas areproperly set up; assemble and replenish food, supplies, and equipmentas required; ensure proper temperature of food in steam tables andcorrect counter display; take orders, portion, and serve food tocustomers; record portions served according to procedure; remove,cover, wrap, label, store, rotate, and discard food and condiments asdirected.Clean assigned areas following proper sanitary procedures; sweep, mopfloors and vacuum rugs and carpets in assigned areas as needed.Clear soiled dishes and refuse from tables in dining halls; scraperefuse into garbage containers; load trays and soiled dishes onconveyers, racks, and carts; remove and dispose of trash.Set up and operate dish machine to clean dishes, trays, silverware,glassware, pots, pans, and utensils; sort utensils and equipment;inspect cleaned items for quality of operations.Maintain sufficient stock and supplies for the proper performance ofduties; unload incoming supplies and equipment; unpack and assist inreceiving, issuing, and transporting materials; verify quantity ofreceived goods against invoices and notify supervisor of discrepancies;stock supplies and equipment in accordance with prescribed procedures;assemble supplies and deliver to ordering unit, using hand truck ifneeded; report needed items for reorder.Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.The above statements describe the general nature and level of workbeing performed by individuals assigned to this classification.This is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilitiesand duties required of personnel so classified.

Duke University was created in 1924 by James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family that built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture of tobacco products and developed electricity production in the Carolinas, long had been interested in Trinity College. Trinity traced its roots to 1838 in nearby Randolph County when local Methodist and Quaker communities opened Union Institute. The school, then named Trinity College, moved to Durham in 1892, where Benjamin Newton Duke served as a primary benefactor and link with the Duke family until his death in 1929. In December 1924, the provisions of indenture by Benjamin’s brother, James B. Duke, created the family philanthropic foundation, The Duke Endowment, which provided for the expansion of Trinity College into Duke University.Duke Campus

As a result of the Duke gift, Trinity underwent both physical and academic expansion. The original Durham campus became known as East Campus when it was rebuilt in stately Georgian architecture. West Campus, Gothic in style and dominated by the soaring 210-foot tower of Duke Chapel, opened in 1930. East Campus served as home of the Woman's College of Duke University until 1972, when the men's and women's undergraduate colleges merged. Both men and women undergraduates now enroll in either the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences or the Pratt School of Engineering. In 1995, East Campus became the home for all first-year students.

Duke maintains a historic affiliation with the United Methodist Church.
