Job Title: Distinguished Lecturer (Creative Writing MFA) - English

Job ID: 20411

Location: Hunter College

Full/Part Time: Full-Time

Regular/Temporary: Regular

If you love to teach brilliant emerging writers, there may be a position for you as a Distinguished Lecturer in the most selective MFA in New York City.

General Duties: Performs teaching duties in area(s) of expertise. Distinguished Lecturers are experienced practitioners or teachers who hold full-time, non-tenure track position with a maximum appointment period of seven years, subject to annual reappointment.

This particular position involves leading seminars and workshops in creative non-fiction, with a special emphasis on styles that hybridize memoir with other forms of inquiry, such as sociology or criticism, or even seem antithetical to it. Your creative non-fiction syllabus might question whether Roland Barthes’s Camera Lucida qualifies as memoir. It might examine how Primo Levi’s Survival in Auschwitz makes the subjective representative of the collective. In assigning modern offerings like Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me or Suki Kim’s Without You, There Is No Us, your syllabus might call upon your students to examine their beliefs about the intersection of memoir and journalism, the political and personal in global narratives, and the evolving role of the memoirist in contemporary cultural scholarship. Then again, we are looking for a world-class teacher who will be as original and genre-bending in his or her syllabus as in their written work. Hunter is committed to active engagement with students and the community at large, and embraces equity, inclusiveness, and global awareness in all dimensions of our work.
