Summary/Objective

This position works with all segments of American University (AU) and WCL including students, administration, faculty, staff, and alumni, to address issues that are important to maximizing our institutional diversity and optimizing the participation of individuals and groups that historically, socially, or legally have been discriminated against or underrepresented in legal education.

Reporting directly to the Dean with a dotted line to the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and Academic Affairs, the Assistant Dean for Diversity, Inclusion, and Affinity (DIA) originates and engages in programming and activities related to pipelining, admission and retention, academic success and bar passage, professional preparedness, job placement, and affinity engagement, and cultural celebration among the diverse and marginalized populations in WCL. The Assistant Dean will strategize with the Vice Dean and Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and Academic Affairs, as well as the faculty, in addressing pedagogical challenges and opportunities flowing from a richly diverse student body, including international (foreign) students for whom English is not a native language. The Assistant Dean, DIA will strive to create a central commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice as part of WCL’s cultural fabric.

The Assistant Dean provides strategic leadership and experience guiding the implementation of the strategic plan initiative focused on diversity and inclusion, as well as AU’s Plan for Inclusive Excellence, establishing metrics, measuring progress, and supporting affinity relations within the overall WCL community, both internally and externally. The Assistant Dean will also direct outward facing efforts on diversity and inclusion in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area. The Assistant Dean will work directly with and on behalf of diverse students and partner with other relevant law school administrators in promoting diversity and inclusion in our relations with alumni, in our special events and conference planning, and in public relations and marketing (including digital/online communications). The Assistant Dean for DIA also counsels and works directly with students individually, collectively (in groups and through student leaders of affinity organizations), and in collaboration with other law school advisors, managers, and faculty. The DIA is a member of the WCL executive team and will undertake strategic projects as directed by the dean.
