TYPE OF POSITION: Other, Academic (50-100% time)

DESCRIPTION: The Elementary Faculty Advisor works with graduate level students enrolled in the UCLA Teacher Education Program. Candidates in TEP pursue a preliminary teaching credential and a Master's degree in Education. Faculty advisors are professional program faculty who support the learning of teacher education students through teaching and field support. They also contribute to the development of the TEP Program through committee work and their work in communities and schools.

QUALIFICATIONS (Required): The qualified candidate must have experience with professional teacher education programs as well as K-12 schooling. Expertise in elementary literacy instruction is required. The successful candidate must have demonstrated an interest in educational reform in urban schooling, and have experience with blending theory and practice in educational environments. Qualified candidates must demonstrate excellence in the teaching of pre-service and beginning teachers.

Required Qualifications:

  • Commitment to promoting social justice in urban schools
  • Master's degree required.

  • Minimum of 5 years elementary school teaching experience in urban school settings (preferably teaching in California)
  • Expertise in elementary literacy instruction
  • Experience in instructional leadership and providing professional development
  • Experience mentoring and/or coaching beginning teachers
  • Understanding of critical theory and transformative pedagogies
  • Understanding of current policies and initiatives influencing public schools
  • Understanding and experience with current curriculum
  • Ability to clearly articulate the connections among educational theory, research and classroom practice
  • Automobile and valid CA driver's license required
  • Ability to supervise bilingual candidates in the field (Spanish)

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree
  • Bilingual authorization strongly preferred
  • Experience in supervising student teachers
  • Experience in teaching single-subject principles and elementary methods

    RESPONSIBILITIES: Teaching: The Elementary Faculty Advisor will engage in teaching different types of courses; including seminars, content methods, education foundations and signature academic courses. Each faculty advisor teaches quarterly. Seminar provides opportunities for students to bring together what they are learning in their coursework and in the field.

    Methodology courses focus on developing students' content-specific pedagogies. Foundations courses, such as language acquisition, educational psychology, and social foundations and cultural diversity, help students deepen their understanding of theories of learning and urban schooling.

    Field Support: The Elementary Faculty Advisor is required to provide regular, on-site field support for TEP students. He/she is responsible for supervising and coordinating all field activities for his/her students.

    TEP Program Support:
  • Committee work: The Elementary Faculty Advisor participates in committee work to support UCLA TEP and attends all TEP Meetings.
  • Connections: The Elementary Faculty Advisor serves as a liaison between the university and the K-12 communities it serves. He/she is responsible for developing relationships with partnership schools and districts, including meeting regularly with school/community partners to inform program improvement.
  • Curriculum: The Elementary Faculty Advisor is responsible for working in partnership with the TEP team to design curriculum in response to state and federal standards, guidelines, and mandates and the grant.

    SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience

    TERM OF APPOINTMENT: July 1 - June 30, 2019 with possibility of renewal. Hiring is contingent upon approval of funding.
