Under moderate supervision and with latitude for independent judgment the Library Clerk assists the Coordinator of Information Services with ensuring the continuity and quality of public services at the Pratt Manhattan Campus. Reporting to the Head of Public Services and coordinating with other library staff from both campuses as needed, the Library Clerk supervises student employees in a wide range of responsibilities including circulation and reference assistance, processing interlibrary loan and reserves requests, conducting stack maintenance, participating in materials acquisition and inventory projects, selecting and curating information resource displays, and participating in social media and outreach efforts to promote library services and resources.

The primary work location will be the library at the Pratt Manhattan Center, 144 W. 14th Street, New York, NY. The Library Clerk will occasionally participate in training, staff development activities, and service related efforts in the Main Brooklyn Campus Library when needed.

The Library Clerk is the primary representative for the branch during evening and weekend shifts. The 35 hour per week regular working schedule will include one Saturday or Sunday work day from 10am to 6pm, and week days from 2:00pm to 10:00pm, with occasional schedule changes based on the academic calendar.

The Pratt Institute Libraries support the research and education of approximately 4,800 undergraduate and graduate students of the internationally recognized Pratt Institute across campuses in Brooklyn and Manhattan. The libraries assist patrons studying in art, design, architecture, information studies, and other fields of academic inquiry and creative work. The successful candidate for this position will support the Pratt Institute Libraries' vision of education, demonstrating commitment to the advancement of diversity and inclusion in our teaching, research, educational support, and community values.

POSITION DUTIES:
  • Assist a diverse community of patrons in locating library materials in print and electronic formats, making appropriate referrals to the Coordinator of Information Services as needed.
  • Provide patrons with up to date information about library services and resources.
  • Oversee circulation procedures including maintenance of online circulation records and participate in automated and manual charging and discharging of library materials
  • Assist in addressing patron questions and concerns
  • Work closely with departments of the Main Library for routine procedures such as submitting book orders, processing new acquisitions, and sending material for mending
  • Oversee the processing of reserve requests and maintain the reserve collection.
  • Assist users with accessing library resources and technologies including public computers, scanners, printers
  • Maintain conference room schedule and assist users with access.
  • Gather statistical data for compiling reports.
  • Coordinate training, scheduling, and supervision of student employees.
  • Participate in stack maintenance.
  • Monitor and process interlibrary loan and Connect NY borrowing and lending requests, in cooperation with the Reference Clerk at the Brooklyn campus library
  • Facilitate library instruction sessions and research consultations with students on the Manhattan campus as appropriate
  • Perform routine opening and closing procedures, including regular evening and weekend schedule
  • Participate in library outreach activities including representing the Manhattan campus library in outreach team meetings, organizing library events, and participation in the library social media team
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Salary: $43,324.58 plus benefits.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree required

Experience: Experience with standard office activities, procedures, systems, and tools; customer service experience a plus. Experience working in a library or information service context preferred.

Skills: Candidate must be able to effectively assist a diverse community information of seekers, therefore excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication and problem-solving skills are a must. Working knowledge of computer systems and applications; the ability to work precisely on detail oriented information; excellent organizational skills; good interpersonal and communication skills with an emphasis on customer service. Knowledge of library related systems and workflows preferred.
