Founded as a teachers college in 1893, Southern has evolved over the past century into a comprehensive public university of more than 10,000 students, offering graduate and undergraduate programs in the liberal arts and professional disciplines.  It is one of four universities in the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities System.  The University is located in New Haven, a city rich with arts and culture, less than 90 miles from New York City and 140 miles from Boston.

The School of Arts & Sciences contains twenty academic departments and three interdisciplinary programs.  With approximately 225 full-time faculty members and more than 300 adjuncts, the school has the largest number of undergraduate majors of any of the four academic schools at Southern.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Associate Dean for the Liberal Arts will be part of a collaborative team, working closely with the Dean; the Associate Dean for STEM; and the faculty on a full range of activities associated with the school.  These include acting as one of two chief operating officers of the school and working in collaboration with the faculty.  The Associate Dean will implement strategic school-wide initiatives (especially in the arts, humanities, and the social sciences), manage faculty-student conflicts, and take a strategic, data-informed approach to enrollment management in collaboration with the department chairpersons, Academic Advising, Admissions, the Registrar’s Office, the First Year Experience Program, and the School of Graduate & Professional Studies.  The Associate Dean for the Liberal Arts will exercise innovative, pro-active problem-solving in guiding the academic departments in the arts, humanities, and the social & behavioral sciences to plan and follow through on key action items.  The Associate Dean will serve as liaison between the School of Arts & Sciences and the School of Education.  S/he will be expected to assist and/ or represent the Dean to the school’s diverse constituencies.  This Associate Dean will have primary responsibility for the arts, humanities, and the social & behavioral sciences and will serve as the primary point of contact for department chairpersons in these departments.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Associate Dean is accountable to the Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences and is the dean’s deputy in all matters concerning the School of Arts & Sciences.  The Associate Dean has special year-round responsibility for the scheduling of liberal arts courses offered for both the academic year and special sessions (i.e. summer and wintersession).  The Associate Dean will perform other duties and responsibilities related to the above which do not alter the basic level of responsibility for the position and will collaborate with his/her counterpart in the Dean’s office.  Finally, the Associate Dean will perform various ad hoc assignments for the Dean or Provost.
