As a member of Rice’s Information Technology team, the systems administrator will be responsible for the administration of endpoint devices and systems (laptops, desktops, etc) using multiple endpoint and device management tools. S/he will deploy and manage standardized configurations and policies, apply patches and upgrade applications, as well as provide level three support. The systems administrator will work with other staff to integrate endpoint management tools into the practices and procedures used by department to support Rice’s computing systems and the campus networking environment. S/he will be responsible for providing advanced level support for the establishment and continued efficient operation of the endpoint management systems supported by Advanced Client Services. The systems administrator will also collaborate with other IT engineering and extended IT support teams on specific projects and support issues.

Education Required Bachelor's Degree Major/Discipline

Engineering, computer science, or related discipline.

Substitution for Education Requirement

May substitute additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis in lieu of the education requirement.

Education Preferred Experience Required 3 years Type of Experience

Related experience as a systems administrator in an enterprise or education environment administering and supporting endpoints using a management tool such as SCCM,KACE, Jamf, etc. along with experience building and deploying standard OS images and applications; Experience in administering and supporting MacOS, OSX, Windows 7 or higher, Windows Server 2012 or higher.

Substitution for Experience Requirement

Education may not be substituted for the experience requirement.

Experience Preferred

- Experience with large scale deployments and upgrades to Windows 10 Enterprise operating systems
- Experience supporting and administering Windows Active Directory
- Experience using Microsoft SCCM
- Experience with Jamf
- Experience with remotely troubleshooting and resolving issues
- Familiarity with Linux Redhat and Satellite
- Experience with a Mobile Device Management platform (Meraki)

License/Certification Required License/Certification Preferred

- Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) Certification
- Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist SCCM Training/Certification
- Microsoft Certified Associate Modern Desktop Administrator

- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
- Ability to apply a developed subject matter knowledge to solve common and complex issues within established guidelines and by recommending appropriate variances

- Ability to troubleshooting and diagnose network connectivity issues (VPN, Wireless and LAN)
- Advanced knowledge of Group Policy (GPO)

Internal / External Contacts

- Daily contact with students, faculty, administrative staff and collaborators
- Frequent contact by telephone and in person with vendors to facilitate installation of new products and maintenance of existing system
- Frequent contact with persons employed by Rice University. Some contact with persons not employed by Rice University

Physical Demands

Must be able to move computer equipment, up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions

- Will be required to carry a cell phone/pager and be reachable during off hours as determined by management
- May be called at night or on weekends to resolve system problems and/or major systems transitions

Endpoint Management Services
- Manages and administers SCCM environment
- Creates and/or maintains master images and custom packages
- Creates and/or deploys software application packages
- Creates and maintains patching deployment schedules
- Works with AD administrators to create, test and deploy configurations using GPO
- Works with other information system staff to integrate systems into the practices and procedures used by information systems to support Rice’s computing systems and the campus endpoint environment
- Writes, modifies and uses programs to provide user utilities and system management tools
- Analyzes and debugs failure modes in highly technical systems involving all areas of the Rice computing environments
- Investigates, retrieves and analyzes data in highly confidential, security sensitive areas
- Increases the reliability and up-time of campus enterprise level IT services
- Monitors and trends service availability and resource usage
- Develops and codes actions to adapt to and correct for possible failure modes
- Designs new services and updates to existing services which include the necessary redundancy to support hardware failures and replacement without impacting service availability, including a detailed analysis of failure modes and their remediation procedures
- Evaluates software packages for needs of OS and installation of 3rd party hardware/software on a wide platforms
- Responsible for computing asset inventory and management
- Investigates new technical solutions to enhance the service offerings

Mac OSX Administration and Support
- Provides technical support for the OSX infrastructure supporting enterprise-level systems and applications

Endpoint Security
- Administers toolset to identify and mitigate security vulnerabilities, and virus/malware removal

Level 3 Technical Support
- Provides third level system support for faculty, staff, and students
- Consults with the Help Desk on operating issues
- Provides support for heterogeneous systems integration
