We’re seeking an Associate Director for the University of Richmond School of Law’s William Taylor Muse Law Library. This position is responsible for Law Library management, teaching, and initiating and monitoring library services and programs. This position oversees, supervises, and coordinates work of the Law Library’s departments and initiatives, and supports relationships with the Law School, the University, library users, and others. The Associate Director assists with budgeting, hiring, and supervision, and strategic planning regarding the future growth and development of the Law Library.

The Associate Director is responsible for teaching, service, and scholarship as a member of the Law Library faculty. Candidates will provide leadership in staff management in a complex organization, including planning, goal-setting, budget, and financial management, as well as supervisory and mentoring skills. It is essential that the successful candidate has an understanding of the critical role law libraries play in legal education, knowledge of changes in legal services and publishing, and the ability to work in a collaborative environment that fosters cross-departmental cooperation to advance the goals of the law school

RESPONSIBILITIES:Leadership and Management
  • Direct and manage changes necessary to ensure the Law Library provides resources and services to support the scholarship and studies of all law school members.
  • Manage law library team leaders in all departments, through direct supervision and delegated oversight.
  • Participate in hiring and evaluation of law library employees, in consultation with the Associate Dean and Operations Manager.
  • Provide vision, oversight, and leadership for the next generation of library services by enabling a collaborative environment for client-focused service.
Teaching, Research, and Reference
  • Develop a library outreach program for research services, including development and delivery of curricular and extracurricular training.
  • Provide reference services at the law library’s Reference Desk.
  • Collaborate with full-time faculty to support research and scholarship, coordinating a system of support for all full-time faculty.
  • Teach legal research in one or more sections of the first year Legal Research program.
Communications and Strategy
  • Develop, implement and maintain a communication strategy to enable accountability and ownership of shared library and law school goals.
  • In consultation with the Associate Dean, prepare library reports, including an annual report.
  • Research and monitor trends in library services, new technologies, and opportunities for services that align with law school goals and respond to new developments in technology and the legal industry.
Other
  • Serve as a member of University and Law School committees as assigned
  • Participate in state, regional, and national law library and library organizations
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Associate Dean for Library & Information Services
QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will have experience coordinating complex projects and activities, inspiring teams to collaborate in developing and improving library services.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Required:

  • BA/BS Degree, or equivalent
  • Master’s degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited program;
  • J.D. awarded by an ABA-accredited law school;
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience supervising professional staff and overseeing programs and administrative duties, preferably in a law library.
  • A strong record of teaching.

  • The ability to work well with faculty, students, staff, and library users.
  • Proven record of strategic decision-making and project management.

WORK HOURS:

  • Full-time, exempt position
  • Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week

SALARY STRUCTURE:
Pay Grade 10 (Hiring Range $83,650.00 to $115,012.00 annually)
