The Assistant Director of the Counseling Center has administrative responsibilities for providing oversight to the Counseling Center’s community engagement efforts including outreach, consultation, and professional continuing education program management. In addition, the Assistant Director is responsible for coordinating program assessment and evaluation efforts, project management and staff supervision. This position assists with the general administration of the Counseling Center and related services and programs and provides leadership in identifying, developing and responding to consultation opportunities with community constituents including faculty, administrators, staff, students and other campus stakeholders. The Assistant Director assists with developing and providing training to the campus community on areas related to the impact of social, emotional and psychological concerns on academic performance.
The Assistant Director also provides individual, group and relationship counseling, case supervision, outreach, consultation, crisis intervention, referral and other duties, as assigned. In addition, the Assistant Director participates in the after-hour / on-call rotation, as needed and develops and maintains strong relationships with Center and campus colleagues in order to provide services that meet the assessed needs of students and of the campus.
This position reports to the Center’s Director and works with the Associate Director and other staff members to offer comprehensive services for students and appropriate consultation for the campus community.

Minimum Requirements

- Doctorate in counseling or clinical psychology from an APA/CPA accredited program with an appropriate pre-doctoral internship experience
– Four years of post-doctoral experience including clinical counseling services, clinical supervision, clinical training, and administrative or teaching responsibilities with at least three years of clinical experience in college counseling centers (can include pre-doctoral internship and/or post-doctoral fellowship)
– Eligibility for licensure as a psychologist in North Carolina is required

List the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position

- Strong administrative, communication (oral and written), clinical, consultation, planning, programming and interpersonal skills.
– Experienced in designing and implementing preventive programming and/or outreach programs.
– Demonstrated generalist orientation, knowledge of and competence working with diverse groups as well as possessing experience in providing services which support the mission of an active university counseling center.

Preferred formal education, professional skills and work experience

Interest and expertise in one or more of the following is desired: mood regulation, anxiety management, multicultural concerns, clinical supervision, groups or mind-body principles.

A commitment to actively engage in practice with diverse populations (racial/ethnic, LGBTQIA, ability , gender, SES, etc.

Experience using creative design software packages (Adobe Creative Suite, Dreamweaver, MS Publisher, etc.

Possess 3-5 years of progressive clinical and administrative experience in college counseling center work.

Clinical training and supervision experience.

Understanding of student development and Student Affairs in a university setting.

Primary purpose of the division, department, and/or grant

The UNCW Counseling Center provides general counseling for students (individual, relationship, and group); development and delivery of outreach programming; consultation services (including targeted campus training efforts) for campus constituencies; crisis intervention services, referral services, and training services (including didactic training and clinical supervision) for early career psychologists and participants in the Center’s pre-licensure training program.
