Job Title BEdA Navigator & Pro-rata Faculty Job Description

This position (exempt and pro-rata faculty) provides direct services to students regarding intake and first-quarter registration processes, assists students to access resources, services and information to optimize student success, retention, and transition from basic education to college coursework.

This position will also provide English language instruction for limited English proficient adults to increase their ability to communicate in English while learning about career pathways and technology. Instruction also includes basic math concepts and integrating technology with instruction in Canvas.

Instructors must be willing to teach Integrated Digital English Acceleration (I-DEA) curriculum and I-BEST. This position will teach evening classes.

Essential Duties Summary

•In collaboration with faculty and other staff, coordinate, facilitate and evaluate all aspects of entry and orientation activities for Basic Education for Adults (BEdA), including (but not limited to) program overview and expectations, program eligibility, WABERS intake, CASAS testing and placement, educational planning and goal setting.
•Assist new, prospective and returning students, one-on-one and/or in a group setting, in identifying courses needed to reach goals and developing their individualized education plan.
•Review documents, records, and applications for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with program policies.
•Assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating application and intake procedures.
•Assist in developing systems and implementing procedures to track student success and retention goals.
•Function as Point-of-Contact for BEdA programs by resolving problems, responding to routine inquiries, and addressing student needs in person, by phone, and by email.
•Send schedule reminders to BEdA students prior to each quarter’s start, and maintain regular communication with students throughout the quarter.
•Provide proactive intervention, as appropriate; facilitate conversations with instructors, navigator, and students to support needed interventions to increase student success, retention, and transitions.
•Help students access support resources and services both on and off campus.
•Participate in SBCTC trainings for certification and to ensure implementation of program requirements (i.e. CASAS Cadre, NRS, WABERS)
•Teach assigned classes to a diverse student body in a variety of formats including face-to-face, online, and hybrid;
•Develop curriculum;
•Prepare syllabi and teaching materials;
•Develop and assess student learning outcomes related to specific course descriptions;
•Maintain required records;
•Teach productive and constructive study skills;
•Identify individual learning needs, and make appropriate adjustments to instruction;
•Create and maintain an environment of rapport and respect.
•Help direct student workers.
•Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

•Master’s degree in ELL/ELA/ESL, Adult Education, English, foreign languages, linguistics, or closely related field from an accredited college or university;
•Teaching experience;
•Ability to adapt teaching to various student learning styles;
•Ability to work flexible hours (this is an evening position);

Preferred Qualifications

•Bilingual, especially in Spanish and English
•Strong computer skills and demonstrated ability to use technology (CANVAS, Microsoft Office Suite, Student Information Systems, SMS, etc.)
•Excellent oral and written communication skills, including active listening skills
• Ability to provide excellent customer service and function well in a busy environment
•Ability to work well within a team and to collaborate with colleagues from other departments
•Adaptable to changing needs, requirements, and information
•Experience working with people from academically, culturally, and economically diverse backgrounds
•Experience in a community college setting
•Experience in student retention
•Recent and successful experience teaching basic skills and/or English to college-ready, non-English speakers at a community college or similar setting;
•Experience in curriculum design and teaching cross-culture, multi-level. face-to-face, hybrid and online;
•Demonstrated proficiency with presentation software;
•Experience using Learning Management Systems (Canvas);
•Experience using WABERS and administering CASAS.

Physical Demands Special Conditions for Eligibility

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This is a split position with the exempt portion being 12 months and the faculty portion being on a 177-day contract. The salary is dependent on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. The state of Washington provides a comprehensive benefits package for state employees. The position may participate in the TIAA/CREF retirement system.

The Region

The college is located in southwest Washington on the 1-5 corridor midway between Seattle and Portland, in a beautifully green area of forests and farmland. Wide fertile valleys are bordered by picturesque Mt. Rainier and the Cascade Range on the east, and the Willapa Hills on the west. Puget Sound and Hood Canal to the north and the Columbia River and famous Columbia River Gorge and Mount St. Helens to the south are within a short commute from the college. The populace enjoys the mild climate of the Pacific Northwest with low mean temperatures of 38 in January and a high mean of 78 in July.

Centralia College East

Centralia College East (CCEast), located in Morton, represents Centralia College's dedication to meeting educational needs of the residents of central and eastern Lewis County. CCEast provides registration services, educational advising and tutoring, Running Start, career counseling, assistance with financial aid, adult literacy tutoring, GED, T.E.E.N. program for pregnant and parenting teens, placement testing (COMPASS), and online access to Centralia College's library resources. Some classes connect CCEast students to the main campus via interactive television. The CCEast Organization of Students offers additional activities for students.

Garrett Heyns Education Center

The Garrett Heyns Education Center (GHEC) is located within the Washington Corrections Center, a medium security correctional facility situated on a 455-acre site three miles north of the city of Shelton. The Corrections Center is located 50 miles north of Centralia College's main campus and houses approximately 1,600 inmates. Centralia College has participated in an interagency agreement with the Department of Corrections to provide educational services for offenders since 1975. GHEC is a branch campus of Centralia College.
